Obituary for MARTHA ELIZABETH SMITH
Martha Elizabeth Smith was born on March 16, 1951 to the late Donald Chew and Mary Washington in Calvert County, MD. She departed this life suddenly on February 19, 2016. Martha affectionately known to many as "Mutt" was a loving and caring person. She was educated in Calvert County public schools. She was passionate about her chosen career, as she worked at the Calvert County Nursing Center for thirty-five years. In her younger years Mutt attended Young's United Methodist Church and later followed faith at Patuxent United Methodist Church, actively serving God until her untimely death. On September 19, 1968, she was united in holy matrimony to Joseph Herbert Smith Sr. From this union; they were blessed with three children.
Martha's heart ... God, family, and her friends. She shared a special bond with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Mutt enjoyed listening to gospel music and attending local gospel concerts. She also sang in her church choir. Traveling was something that she loved to do, and on her travels she was sure to collect foreign currency. She had an appreciation of stuffed animals, elephants and jewelry. Rod and Reel was a place that Mutt loved to visit, you could have found her there at any given time.
Mutt was preceded in death by her son, Joseph Herbert Smith Jr.; two grandchildren, Joseph and Devante Smith; nephew, Stacey Smith; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Christine.
Mutt leaves to cherish her memories: Joseph Herbert Smith Sr.; two daughters, Maxine and Rita (Fred); six step children, Lenora (Eric), Dewayne, Francine, Curtis, Allen, and Jasmine; two sisters, Cluistine (Chester), Brenda (Robert); Aunts, Mazie (Frederick), Daisy (Benjamin), Lettie; brothers-in-law, Edward and Spike (Stacey); sisters-in-law, Bertha, Gladys, Algea, Ann, and Roberta; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a special friend of 30 plus years, Mr. Robert Long.
