Obituary for HILDA VIRGINIA GRADE
On June 8, 2015, a very precious jewel was transitioned from our midst. Our loving mother,
Hilda V. Grade peacefully departed this life to be with the Creator.

Hilda was born in Calvert County on September 30, 1919 to the late James Oliver and Mazie Ellen Booze. Hilda was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Thomas Henry Wren on January 10, 1943 and the late Mack Thomas Grade on December 10, 1954.

Hilda accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a very early age. Mount Hope United Methodist Church was always her 'home' church. She always would say, "Wait on the Lord; that He will always take care of your needs".

Hilda grew up in Calvert County, Maryland, where she attended the public schools. As a young child, Hilda worked in the tobacco fields with her mother, father and her sisters and brothers. After graduating from high school, Hilda moved to Washington, D.C. and worked many different jobs. She worked for the General Accounting Office and the Navy Yard. She often worked in jobs historically dominated by men. During World War II, while the troops were abroad, she worked on the home-front making bullets. Hilda, also, was among the limited number of women who were taxi cab drivers. She provided transportation for many government officials.

Hilda became a home maker and a good mother to her three children. She enjoyed attending her church, John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church. There she sang in the Cathedral Choir and participated in other church activities.

She returned to Calvert as a woman of mission, service and style. She became active in her home church by serving as a communion steward; participating and traveling with the United Methodist Women; by being a representative for the Board of Child Care; and for holding a past position of chairing the Staff-Parish Relations Committee. Additionally, Hilda joined the Red Hat Club and became a volunteer at Calvert Memorial Hospital.

Hilda is predeceased by one son, Thomas Christopher Hunter; one granddaughter, Lori Hunter; and four brothers, Thomas, Lewis, Samuel and Joseph; and two sisters, Bernice and Juanita. She leaves to celebrate her life, her daughter, Thomasine; son, Mack; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; a host of loving nieces and nephews; her beloved church family; and Calvert Memorial patients and staff.
