Bernice C. Carter born on December 31, 1922
to the late Sewell and Sarah Howe. She departed this life on
December 25, 2018. She was the youngest of twelve siblings
and was born, raised & attended school in Calvert County,
MD. After her schooling, she moved to Washington, D.C. and
got a job doing clerical work. She later moved back home
and married the late Freeland Carter. The marriage was
short lived and she moved to New York and became a strong
independent woman. Bernice would work in New York in
the winter months and return to Calvert County during the
summer to farm tobacco. She knew as much about farming
tobacco as the average man. She loved to do her own lawn
& gardening. She would raise lots of vegetables and would
wind up with 2-3 freezers of you name it, she had it. She kept
everything immaculate.
Bernice did it her way. When her sisters came down from
Baltimore to visit, they all went back with a cooler full of
goodies. She was a hard worker. She worked as a nurse's aid
at the old hospital in Prince Frederick for twenty years. She
loved reading her bible and was sort of a quiet person but
could give you a good laugh every now and then. She was
not blessed with children but was fortunate to have nieces &
nephews close by to assist her.
Bernice was preceded in death by brothers: Manny, Benjamin,
Richard & Grant Howe and sisters: Iona Howe, Elizabeth
Cropper, Adele Nash, Callie and Edith Freeland, Helen Howe
and Selina Hudgins, a special niece Joan O 'Neal & a special
nephew Estep Kyler. She also leaves behind a faithful friend
Annie Elliott. She will be missed.
