Obituary for Iola Jones

Iola  Jones, 94 of Sunderland, MD, died Thursday, July 24, 2008 in Lexington Park, MD.She was the first child born to the late Harrison Gorman and the late Susie Cook Gorman in Calvert County, Maryland on Friday, September 19, 1913.  Iola attended Calvert County Public Schools.  She began working at a very young age to help support her family.As a young lady, Iola married the late Gross Jones and  from this union, Wilbert, Carolyn, and Ida were born.  After the passing of her son and husband, she worked tirelessly to support her children and help care for her grandchildren.  She worked as a Domestic. Iola was a faithful member of St. Edmonds United Methodist Church until her health began to fail.  After moving to Lexington Park, with her granddaughter, Diann, she enjoyed attending Oasis of Victory Christian Church and Living Hope United Pentecostal Church.  She always looked forward to Father Damian Shadwell of St. Cecilia Parish coming o visit her and giving her communion.  For as long as her health allowed, she attended the Vivian Ripple Adult Daycare Center in Hollywood, MD.In so many different ways, Iola touched the life of her family members and friends.  She loved helping and caring for others.  She was known for always sending you away from her home with "a piece of change" or a bag of goodies.  Many knew her to be an extremely hard worker and very resilient.  Iola loved assembling photo albums, gardening, listening to gsopel music, watching TV News, shopping, and traveling with her family.She was preceded in death by sisters, Eunice, Corrina, Eva, Sylvia; brothers, Leeander, Revere, Thurman, Harrison, Melvin "Ray", Hubert, Raynar and great grandson, Troy.Surviving are daughters, Carolyn (William) and Ida; grandchildren, Diann, Darlee, Denise, Wilbur, Cinseria, Faith, Cornell, Michael, and Travis; 12 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Nathaniel (Diane); sisters-in-law, Tivola and Corrine; daughter-in-law. Georgia Lee; a devoted caregiver, Milford Brooks "Poppy"; a host of other relatives and friends.
