Obituary for BARBARA L. HAMPTON
Barbara was born on October 10, 1978 in Washington State to Danny and Pamela Varner. She had one brother-Riche (now deceased). Barbara later moved to the east coast to live with her mother, and married Rajahn Hampton. Barbara had two children-Marcel Varner and Sukaya Hampton. Barbara’s greatest joy and greatest life accomplishment was being the mother of Marcel and Sukaya.
Life’s struggles and turmoil brought Barbara to the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women at Jessup, where Barbara’s love for God and her walk of faith began to shape her evangelical spirit. Under the guidance of the Chaplain, volunteers of faith, and classes in biblical studies, Barbara became proficient in the reading, understanding and teaching of the WORD of God.
Among the services she performed at Jessup were administrator for classes in biblical studies, worship leader, singer on the Praise Team, clerk for the Chaplain’s office, administrator for the Jessup Connection (a mentoring program for inmates through letter-writing); she mentored inmates and had a mentor at Jessup through the Prison Mentoring Program; she is a graduate of the Bible Institute and an advocate for other women seeking guidance for their journey while incarcerated. She participated in the Sunday evening worship services conducted by local volunteer church Pastors, even choosing to tithe to those churches!
More than anything else, Barbara is remembered as a highly spirited woman who loved the Lord and praised him with her whole heart! She was full of life and a fighter. Even though incarcerated, she was always seeking support for her children and found a way to reach out so that they knew that she loved them and thought about them every single day of her time away from them. She will be remembered for the efforts and energy she poured into her own defense and advocacy as she worked to have her time reduced due to medical reasons. And she worked just as hard for other women at MCIW. She used her voice, her heart and her hands to make things happen for the glory of the Lord and the Kingdom. Barbara departed this life on February 2, 2021, praising her way right into Glory!
