Obituary for MARYJANE SUSAN CASTRESE
Maryjane Susan Castrese, age 81, passed away peacefully September 4, 2020 after a long fight with Alzheimer’s. She was born December 15, 1938 in Patterson, New Jersey and was an outstanding student-athlete at the New Jersey School for the Deaf. She was a devoted Catholic and married her love, John Salvatore Castrese, who preceded her in death in 1983.
Maryjane was a dedicated mother first and foremost to a baby boy who passed away in 1974 and to John David Castrese. She lived most of her years in Wyckoff, NJ before moving to Texas where she worked for Hertz Claims Management and retired in 2009. Then, she lived in various places in Oregon, Vermont, Washington D.C., and Maryland to be with her son John. Maryjane treasured her time with John and rarely missed opportunities to be with him. She passed on her love for sports to John where he studied and started his career in sports administration.
Family and friends were Maryjane’s passion and delight. She grew up with many siblings and had wonderful memories with them along with their spouses and extended family members. She had a warm and greeting personality and always made friends everywhere she went. She was an active member in the NJ Community Center for the Deaf by serving in various roles and volunteering in their events. She enjoyed her outings to the local Deaf Bowling Tournaments, and various Deaf events throughout the years.
Maryjane shared her love with cooking, a delicious skill she picked up from her mother Giuseppina (Josephine) Del Conte. She kept an immaculate house, was highly skilled with knitting and crochet hooks that she learned from her mother as well and was a farm girl at heart. Gardening and taking care of animals were also a passion of hers.
A funeral service celebrating Maryjane’s life will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at 10:00am at St. Elizabeth Church, 700 Wyckoff Ave, Wyckoff, NJ 07481 and the burial service will be at 10:45am at Maryrest Cemetery, 770 Darlington Ave, Mahwah, NJ 07430. Condolences can be sent to John D. Castrese at 3018 Button Bush Lane, Russett, MD 20724.
