GRIEF & HEALING
affirmations to uplift & help you through
each stage of the grieving process.
Daniel Linwood Gross, was born to the late William and Olivia Gross on April 10, 1948 in Lusby, Maryland. He was educated in the Calvert County Public School System, graduating from Brooks High School in 1966.
After a short stint in Connecticut, Daniel moved back to Calvert County, Maryland where he later met and married Linda Lee Commodore on May 17, 1975. From this union one daughter was born, Shareita Maria. Although Daniel and Linda’s marriage ended in divorce, they remained good friends and he always upheld his responsibilities as a man and father. Although Daniel had a few nicknames (Muddy Water, Dickie and Danny) his most loved was the nickname Shareita and Elijah used and affectionately called him, “Pop-Pop”.
Daniel was a hardworking and skilled laborer for the Local Laborers’ Union 74 for many years. In 1990 he retired from Local Laborers’ Union 456 where he worked on tunnels, bridges and Metro Subway Stations. And in July of 1992 Daniel was blessed with his first and only grandchild, Anthony Elijah Williams, whom he loved (along with Shareita) most of all.
Pop-Pop was a strong, stand-up type of man who always supported his family, friends and siblings – always having their backs no matter what. Each of them have at least 10 stories a piece to prove how Pop-Pop came to their rescue at some point in time or gave advice that couldn’t be ignored. Daniel was a real people person. He would stop and talk to people and joke with them as if he knew them, for hours. His outgoing personality and fashionable ways always got him lots of attention and he was most known for his love of gold jewelry and
hats. He had a different hat for every occasion in all shapes, sizes and colors.
He was an avid reader and books (especially getting new ones) got him excited. He loved to look things up that he didn’t know, but it wasn’t often that he didn’t know something. His love of reading was right up there with his love for music. You could find him listening to music on his personal tape player or record player in the house. Pop-Pop loved sharing his love for music with others. If there was an album you didn’t have or couldn’t get, he would burn a cd for you or make a cassette tape for you - whichever media method you needed, Pop-Pop was sure to hook you up!
Outside of his personal interests, Pop-Pop loved to go fishing and crabbing. Like their father, Daniel and his brothers went on lots of fishing trips so they could “get the good fish”. He also loved bike riding, playing basketball and running. Pop-Pop loved to run and years ago, became a well-known and frequent marathon runner in the Maryland, and DC areas. He always said that running made him feel free and he liked to do it as often as he could. When Pop-Pop’s health started to decline, he preferred to spend time with Shareita and Elijah, which was even more enjoyable to him than his favorite pastimes.
Daniel is preceded in death by: his father, William Gross; mother, Olivia Gross; sister, Delores Jones; and sister-in-law, Josephine Gross. Pop-Pop leaves to mourn: his daughter, Shareita Gross; grandson, Elijah Williams; siblings, Page Gross (Minnie), William Gross, Olivia Brooks, Mary Mackall, Fred Gross (Madelyn), Randolph Gross (Theresa), Naomi Watkins (Lee) and Edward Gross; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
