Obituary for Zelma D. Chew

Zelma D. Chew, 59 of Saint Leonard, MD, died Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD.She was born Tuesday, January 4, 1949 to the late Henry Brooks and the late Catherine Heigh Prout. She achieved her education through the Calvert County Public Schools. On June 9, 1984, she married Benjamin "Frankie" Chew. From this union there were no children, but God blessed them with thirty-five childcare children. Many times she would take them home with her on the weekends and on Sunday she would bring them to church. Zelma worked as Daycare Provider.Zelma had many nicknames. She was "Brooke" to Frankie. "Martha Washington" to Sonny, "Lucy" to Estep and "Mommy" to some of her childcare children. She was also called "Miracle Child" by her aunts. She loved the Lord. On many Sundays when the sermon gave her a spiritual outburst, she would say "alright, alright now tell the truth." She would testify about the many surgeries (300) she had. She would always say "I was never afraid because God was in charge." She was a member of ICU, Patuxent United Methodist Church Usher Board and the Voice of Praise Choir.She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Ollie "Mutter" Chew, sisters-in-law, Judy Lester and Louise Chew and brothers-in-law, Oscar James Chew and Alonzo Chew. She is survived by a devoted husband of 24 years, Benjamin F. Chew, Godchildren, Langston Watts, III, Shalondia Gross, and Olivia Grant; sisters and brothers, Thelma Watts, Homer (Carolyn) Heigh, Kathy and Brenda Heigh, Cinderella (Clifford) Claggett, Cordelia (Wilbur) Hawkins, Theresa (Warren) Wesley, Darlene Brooks, Katina Jones, James (Gale) Brooks, Thelma Brooks (Graston Jones), Ronald Brooks, Terry (Dorenda) Brooks, and Maurice Brooks; sisters-in-law, Mary "Cookie" Mackall, Barbara Jean Gross (Robert), Mildred "Bug" Harris (William), and Ella Mae Johnson (Sonny); brothers-in-law, Donald "Tom" Chew and Robert "Estep" Chew; uncles and aunts, Ethel (Willie) Goins, Martha (James) Jones, Laura (Ray) Allen, Ollie Joppy, Roosevelt Mackall, Irene Parran, Mollie Brooks, Kathleen (Daniel) Ray, Geneva Hart, Odella Chew, Rosalee (Phil) Fields, Lorraine Williams, Joyce Brooks Bernard, Alphonso (Arlene), Elder (Shirley), MacArthur (Clarice), and Joseph (Ophilia) Brooks; a host of other relatives and friends.
