Obituary for WINDELL P. MASON
Windell Patrick Mason was born on May 10", 1944 in Washington, D.C. to Daisy and Joseph A. "Winfield" Mason. He grew up in far NE Washington, DC and graduated from Spingarn High School. He later received additional education through the Department of Agriculture. While growing up, Windell attended St. Luke's Catholic Church, and spent a lot of time playing in the neighborhood with friends and siblings. Windell married Sandra Huskins on December 4", 1971. Their union produced Nathan H., Isaac H., and Naomi H. Mason. Windell was an avid basketball lover, playing often throughout adulthood. He impacted many young people during his stints as a basketball coach for Lanham Boys and Girls Club.
Windell was employed by the Department of the Navy, and worked his way up, retiring as a Program Analyst after 40+ years. Always hard working, he maintained multiple jobs, serving as a role-model for his children and others about the importance of hard work.
While basketball was his favorite hobby, Sixes Road was a close second. His high regard for and love of family motivated his commitment to maintaining the property for use by family and friends. His barbeque cookouts are legendary featuring his delicious, home-cooked food, and warm, friendly, family atmosphere. He enjoyed watching various cooking shows, and survival shows. Metro, the house cat, has been affected by the rhythm change in the house since his absence, even though they had a love-hate relationship.
He exhibited a caring, generous spirit as exemplified by his willingness to relocate to a new residence, in order to help care for Mrs. Vivian Huskins and Mrs. Laura Hardy, Sandra's ill mother and ill grandmother, respectively. Our families owe him a huge debt of gratitude for his patience and kindness. He was pragmatic about life's ups and downs. He often shared his world knowledge with his children, and anyone else fortunate enough to hear. Throughout his life, Windell touched many, influenced many, and taught us to be kind and selfless. He focused on the good in others. One of his noteworthy, and often frustrating habits was that he didn't complain about anything, ever. Even though he was waging a long health battle, his response to questions about his health was an upbeat "I'm fifty-fifty." His loved ones will remember him for all these and many more character attributes, from working as a pre-teen and sharing his earnings with his mother, to countless other selfless acts. He often prepared food for his children, helping out these busy adults.
There is no doubt of the magnanimous impact Windell had on this world during his time here. Even the medical staff at the hospital were affected by his kindness and concern. Windell transitioned to his heavenly home on May 15, 2018, surrounded by a host of loved ones, including his beloved wife, Sandra, and three adoring children. He will be deeply missed, and his memory and barbecue sauce will be treasured.
