Obituary for WILLIAM EUGENE POLK, SR.
William Eugene Polk Sr, affectionately known as "Billy" was born on October 29, 1953 in Anchorage, Alaska to the late William James and Mary Cordelia Polk. Billy departed this life Sunday June 24, 2018.
Billy graduated in 1971 from Duval High School in Lanham, Maryland. He took pleasure in reliving the glory years of Duval basketball and the schools 1971 State Basketball Championship. While he did not play on the team, he spoke proudly of his friends and neighbors who were on the team.
Billy was employed as a Federal Express courier for the past 22 years. He was grateful with becoming a FedEx employee with the assistance of Dorthea Hill. Prior to that, he also worked for World Wide Delivery Services as a courier. He loved to drive while off and on the clock. Billy was very fond of his profession as well as his many colleagues, which over the years became his extended family.
Billy played softball for the Glenarden All-Stars in the mid-80's, going by the nickname of "Doc". He loved bowling and playing billiards. He was an avid sports fan of the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles. He loved to have fun, had a great sense of humor and was always willing to help those in need. He loved to visit his devoted family members across the various areas of Nashville, Tennessee. He loved visiting Calvert County to attend his in-law's functions. Whenever he visited, it seems like he always tried to spend the night at Gerald and Sandy's house.
Billy was united in marriage to Darlene Hunter on August 19, 1984. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a very loved man and loved his family deeply.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Darlene Polk; three sons, William Polk Jr. (Christie) of Capitol Heights, MD, Melvin Jones of Laurel, MD and Kevin Jones Sr. of New Carrollton, MD.; five Grandsons, William Isaiah Polk, Leighton Jones, Nicholas Deve, Kevin Jones Jr. and Donovan Brooks; one sister, Timi Simpson of Atlanta, GA.; one brother-in-law, Elijah Hunter Jr.; five sisters-in- law, Gladys Holland, Mary Hunter, Sandra Hunter (Gerald Gray Sr.), Dorrine Rhode and Helen Smith (Garry); a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. His best friends, Robert "Lefty" Edmonds, Kevin Holt and Guy Williams; special friends, Pedro Hill Sr., Floyd Hughes and Henry Robinson (referred to as his brother from another mother). Billy was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother in-law; three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
