On Thursday, December 21, 2017, Wardell Russell Gray departed his earthly home to live in his Heavenly Home.
Wardell, was the fifth often children born to Doris and Calvert Gray. He was born September
15, 1944 in Calvert County, Mary land. Wardell had several nicknames such as "Shorty" and
"Breeze," in which he would answer to quicker than Wardell. He graduated from Brooks High
School in 1962.
In 1990, he married E. Dean Gunter. Together they raised their three daughters, Ciara Gray,
Kimberley Stephens, and Trentia Barnett. He also was instrumental in rearing his three
grandchildren: Kimani, Keenan, and Kimberlyn "Maddie" Stephens, whom he loved dearly. One of his favorite past times was watching his grandchildren play sports.
Wardell worked for the Metro Bus Company in Washington, DC for many years. He continued
with his passion of driving buses until his health began to decline in 2014. He was a man of
many trades. His love for carpentry afforded him the privilege to build his own home.
Wardell was introduced to the church at an early age by his mother and received his early
Christian Doctrine at Mt. Hope United Methodist Church. He later became a founding member
of Calvert Fellowship Church, where he served as a head usher, President of Men's Ministry,
Covenant Care Leader, Building Committee Member, Male Chorus, and the Pastor's armor
bearer.
Wardell was dedicated to the youth and was a mentor to many. He loved the competitive sports of basketball and football and enjoyed being a coach for both. He also loved playing tennis with his good friend, Alan Brown.
Wardell was also a former member of the Masonic Lodge.
To cherish his memories, Wardell leaves his wife, Dean Gray, daughters: Ciara, Kimberley and Trentia, three grandchildren: Kimani, Keenan, and Kimberlyn "Maddie", five sisters: Theresa (Howard) Booth, Callen Gray, Laura (Jarvis) Wilkins, Doris (Nathaniel) Mitchell, Geraldine (Steven) Lee, four brothers: Calvert (Smiley) Gray, Rhandel (Barbara) Gray, Lawrence (Alberta) Gray, Clement (Denise) Gray, a host of nieces, nephews, best friends Willie and Margaret Coleman, Willie Brown, and other relatives and friends.
