Obituary for Thomas Elie Long

Thomas Elie Long, 63 of Owings, MD, died Thursday, June 5, 2008 at Calvert Memorial Hospital.He was born Tuesday, April 17, 1945 in Calvert County, Maryland to the late Clifton Long and the late Ethelene Offer Long.  Thomas, better known to many as Elie and to family and friends as "Sonny".  He received his education in the public schools of Calvert County.Sonny worked for many years as a bricklayer before joining Firestone and Merchant Tires in Annapolis, MD   an Automotive Mechanic. Due to a back injury, Sonny had to retire from his love of working on vehicles.  His sons will prosper from the knowldege that he has shared with them.Sonny was united in holy matrimony to Ruth "Diddle" on April 7, 1984.  Sonny was a family man and enjoyed going to the race track with his sons.Sonny's favorite past times included fishing and working on cars.  If he brought fish home at 2:00 a.m., Diddle would get out of bed and fire up the frying pan and cook him hot fish.Sonny leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Ruth; three sons, Christopher(Melissa), Rydell, and Kenneth Long; one daughter, Beverly Cooke (Maurice); three grandchildren, Christopher Jr., and Sharnice Long, and Dominique Cooke; ten sisters, Rose, Christine, and Darlene Long, Shirley Rafinello (John), Carlene Holland, Jean Conley (Bernard), Leslie Gross (Larry), Maxine Murray (George), Claudia Smith, LaShawn Brooks (Howard); three brothers, James (Alice), Patrick (Darlene), and Durrell (Felicia) Long; sister-in-law, Ethel Jones (Frank) and brother-in-law, William Reed; best friends Frank Jones, his fishing partner, Josephine Pratt, Gene Long, Henry Kent, and Ethel Jones (medical transporter); a host of other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Geraldine Johnson; brother, Oliver Long and nephew, DaNell Johnson.Funeral services were held at Ward's Memorial UM Church, Saturday, June 14, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. with  Rev. Dr. Shirlimarie McAroy-Gray officiating.Interment was at Patuxent UM Church Cemetery, Huntingtown, MD.Pallbearers were Rodell Berry, Keith Jones, Antonio Garner, Rodney Jones, Tommy Wills, Reginald Berry, Jamar Gross, and William Long .
