Obituary for Tema Ruth Mason

Tema Ruth Johnson Mason was the daughter of Sara Gross Saunders (William Isaac Saunders, Sr.) and McKinley Monroe Johnson (Thelma Brooks Johnson). She was born on July 10, 1942, and after a lengthy illness, bid this world farewell on Thursday, February 26, 2009.
Tema was born in Calvert County and educated in its public schools. Grade school teachers Ms. Regina Brown and Ms. Blanch Wilson inspired her to seek a career in education. In 1964 she received a Bachelor's degree in Education from Coppin State University; she returned to Calvert County and began to touch the lives hundreds of children. While teaching at Central, Beach, Island Creek, Our Lady Star of the Sea, and Mutual Schools, Tema expanded her professional knowledge with graduate courses from Bowie State, Maryland, George Washington, and Towson State Universities. Tema was known to use her creative talents, and often her own money, to provide materials and projects that would cultivate her students' interest and their learning. She retired after 32 years of devoted service to the school system and her students.
Tema was a very generous person and gave of herself to others without expecting anything in return. She often recognized a need in someone and voluntarily provided assistance. She enjoyed reading, sewing, arts and crafts, puzzles and board games, home improvement projects and collecting thimbles. Tema was a humble person and her approach to life was simple, straight-forward, and uncomplicated.
Tema was baptized at Brooks Methodist Church at an early age and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was an active member of Brooks until her health failed.
She was also an active member of the American Legion's Ladies Auxiliary and a steadfast supporter of the St. Leonard's Volunteer Fire Department Company 7 Alarmers.
Preceding her in death were her parents and siblings: Darnell Johnson and Laura Buck (Richard). She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Glenn Tyrone Mason; step-parents: William Saunders, Sr. and Thelma Johnson; siblings: Carol Johnson, Vashti Peagler (Richard), Iszetta Saunders-Johnson (Michael), William Saunders, Jr. (Arvenia), Denise Saunders, Larry Johnson (Janice), Vaughn Johnson (Dianette), Robin Brown (Michael), Janice Berry (Marcus), Penny Hall (Kim), Timothy Johnson (Bernadine), Marie Reynolds, Gordon Butler (Joan); a host of nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins; sisters-in-law Ora Savoy (Ken) and Muriel Mason; brother-in-law Leo Chase; and numerous friends and former colleagues.
Tema's departure also leaves an empty spot in the lives of many friends, especially: Alice Gray, Sandra Canary, Carolyn Jones, Lucy Wallace, Marian Johnson, Louvenia Banks, and Ava Gray, who thought of her as a sister.
