Obituary for TURNER WARFIELD MACKALL
Turner Warfield Mackall, 87, passed away on Tuesday, May 31 in Prince Frederick, Maryland. Turner was blessed with a long life that was marked by continuous growth and development, deepening spirituality, and strong family ties.
Born on July 21, 1928, to Calvert Oza and Pauline Gross Mackall in Washington, DC, Turner was the oldest of twelve children. He was educated in Calvert County public schools and was a proud graduate of the historic, all-black Sampson Brooks High School. After high school, Turner received postsecondary training in social and business studies. He then worked in the farming and agriculture field for decades. He also worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service (USPS)-a position he held until retirement.
In his early years, Turner farmed to earn a living, but farming was more than a job, it was his true passion. Even in his spare time, Turner could be found gardening, growing crops, and tending to livestock. He also loved landscaping and was happiest while riding his lawnmower. In many ways, he was the family's own "organic" farmer. Turner also took great pride in the upkeep of his home. In his later years, when advised to reduce time spent working outdoors and on home improvement projects, Turner continued to do what he loved best. And while he welcomed the assistance of his grandson and other relatives, his preference was always to do it on his own.
Turner had an admirable work ethic, having devoted more than 70 years to work. Even after he retired from the USPS, he went back to work. Although quiet and reserved, Turner was often willing to lend a helping hand. Whether it was fixing a car, repairing a roof, or simply hauling items in his truck, Turner was ready, willing, and able. Turner worked hard, but he also knew how to relax. His favorite hobby was golf. He played golf all across southern Maryland, but one of his favorite spots was in the mountains of VA at Massanutten Resort, where he enjoyed time most with his family. Turner also found enjoyment in eating good food. He enjoyed a good steak, tender ribs and kept a private stash of sugary sweets.
Turner accepted Christ at an early and was a longstanding member of Patuxent United Methodist Church in Huntingtown, Maryland. At the church, he served on the Trustee and Usher Boards. He was also a member of the Prince Hall Masons - Carroll Victoria Lodge #71 and served as the secretary of the chapter for many years. As Turner matured, so did his commitments to faith. His spiritual walk deepened as he and his wife shared in daily Bible study. As a result, Turner opened his heart and home even wider to his family and friends. He recognized and accepted his responsibility to be a role model. During this time, Turner developed strong relationships with several younger men who visited his home periodically. Turner shared his own story as a way of helping these men navigate their own life path.
Turner is survived by his devoted wife of45 years, Juanita C. Mackall; children, William "Button" (Phyllis), Calvin "Buddy", Carolyn "Sis" Blake (Leroy), Donald (Rose), Phyllis Mackall, Sonja M. Costner (Wallace), and Sybil Mackall; sisters Phyllis Warren, Delores Mackall, Doris McNeil (Parham), Regina Grimes (Benjamin), and Shirley Mackall; sisters-in-law Ann, Betty, Martha Mackall, and Yvonne Cooper; brother-in-law Benjamin Heyward; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He also leaves behind several beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a special friend of the family, Annette Thorpe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Bernard Calvin, Raymond Wilson, Russell Leroy, James Edward Mackall, Thelma Pauline Murphy, and Bernice Mauldin; son Robert "Johnny" Mackall; brothers-in-law John Cooper, Jr. (Constance) and Chester Cooper, Sr.; and sister-in-law Thomasena Heyward.
