Obituary for SIDNEY THURMAN BROOKS, SR.
Sidney Thurman Brooks, Sr. was born on April 27, 1939 the fourth of six children of the late Marjorie Harrod Brooks and Albert David Brooks.
Sidney attended Calvert County Public Schools. As a teen, Sidney, his four brothers, and their father Albert started Brooks Brothers Masonry Company. Led by their father, the Brooks men built houses from the ground up, from the foundation to the roof, in homes and communities, in which many of us live today. In the mid-1970s, Sidney continued working in the construction industry as a member of The Laborers Union, in the Washington DC metropolitan and Southern Maryland areas. He retired in 2001.
He married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Reid, on November 3, 1963. They enjoyed thirty eight years of blissful marriage until her passing. From this union they shared three children. He adored his entire family including Daddy Russell and Momma Eva; his in-laws, Dorothy and James Claggett and William (deceased) and Bertina Holland and especially all of his first cousins.
Sidney was a faithful member of Plum Point United Methodist Church. He greatly contributed to his church’s fundraising efforts and was a dedicated supporter of the Annual Brooks Day service.
Sidney carried the Brooks gene for the love of baseball. He was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan, a collector of Orioles memorabilia, watched every game from spring training to the playoffs and attended home games. All of these things brought joy to his life. Perhaps second to his love for the Orioles was his love for horses. With the love of horses, naturally, came the love of westerns. He watched endless hours of Gun Smoke, Cheyenne, and Bonanza.
Sidney was called home on October 21, 2016. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; brothers, Chauncey “Duke” and Kermit “Chuck”, and sister, June “Mickey” Gross. Carrying his memories forward are his sons, Charles Harrod, Jr., Sidney Jr., and Shawn (Corlisa) Brooks; his daughter, Shay Avis and brothers, Albert (Gertrude) and Langston (Vernice–deceased) of Prince Frederick; four grandchildren Sidney III, Miranda, Shawn Jr. and Shavonah; father and mother-in-law, James and Dorothy Claggett, mother-in-law Bertina Holland (William-deceased); sisters-in-law, Maxine Brooks, Phyllis G. Reid (Russell Reid, Jr.-deceased), Judy Holland (Callie Hammond), Regina Byrd (Alvin), Wendy Banks (Maurice), Regina Claggett, Mabel Gray, Patricia Forman (Wayne), Dolise Mackall (Nathan); brothers-in-law James Claggett, Jr., Clifton Claggett (Cinderella), William Dean Holland (Beatrice), Melvin Claggett, Sr. (Veronica), Darron Holland, Eugene Claggett, Arthur Hanton (Pamela-deceased); special friends, Randolph Keemer, Jr., Ronnie Mackall, William Long, Billy Brown, Calvin Chase and Howard Morsell; a host of nephews and nieces, and a multitude of other relatives and friends. He loved all of his family but shared a rich relationship with Derrick “Ricky” Brown, William Brooks, Harry Harrod, Alice Sutton, Phillip Washington, and special extended family Pastor Lowell Sr. and Mrs. Olivia Thomas and family, Ralph and Patsy Parran and family, and Martha and the late Russell Mackall and family.
