Obituary for SEWELL S. GRIFFITH

Sewell Silverent Griffith was born on Friday, June 25, 1934 in the home of Sewell and Bertha Howe, Stockley Road, Maryland. He was the first child of Carl Silverent and Myrtle Howe Griffith.

He attended elementary school in Prince Frederick, Maryland and graduated from William Brooks High School in 1951. He attended Hampton Institute and completed his B. S. degree in business administration at Morgan State College in 1957.

As the first-born child, he was somewhat spoiled and was admired by his younger siblings. He was the first to date, drive, go to college and the first to go into the military. He was outgoing, socially sophisticated and well-liked by others. He was a born leader and enjoyed being in the public eye.

Sewell 's dreams were almost shattered when he was involved in an automobile accident with his sister, Helen. Fortunately, he recovered without any disability and returned to Morgan to complete his degree. After graduating, he attempted to revive the failing Hi Hat Club family business. However, he was drafted into the Army and that ended his plan to keep the family business going. Sewell served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961; he served in Korea and attained the rank of Lieutenant.

He worked as a contracting officer, Office of Education in the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Philadelphia. He subsequently settled in Washington, D. C. and entered the Federal Service, where he honed his accounting skills. He was a Certified Public Accountant and was well known in Calvert County, where he provided tax and accounting services to individuals and small businesses. He was a member of various professional organizations and received awards and recognition because of his outstanding service and performance.

He married Pamela Ghattas who was the love of his life and his faithful companion until her passing in September 2016. Although they had no children, their beloved pet Jack, was just like a member of the family.

He developed an interest in boating and enjoyed piloting his yacht, the Sea Wench, along the waterways of Washington and Maryland. In a strange twist of fate, Captain Sewell Griffith followed in the wake of his grandfather, Captain Daniel Griffith.

Sewell leaves to cherish his memory: four sisters, Mrs. Carlene Harrell, Mrs. Velma Tolson, Dr. Alease Griffith-King and Mrs. Allyson Cotton; three brothers, Dr. Marlin Griffith, Dr. Carl Griffith and Dr. James Griffith; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Melanie Griffith and Mrs. Beverly Griffith; two brothers-in-law, Mr. Macon Cotton, Jr. and Dr. Kenneth King; a special relationship with Tony Griffith; a special play brother, Carl "Mickie" Ray; a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and many other relatives and
friends.

He is predeceased by his wife Pamela Ghattas; parents, Carl Silverent and Myrtle Griffith; his sister, Helen Griffith Hill and his play brother, Bobby Carter.

Sewell Silverent Griffith loved life; he had an easy smile and a cheerful greeting to all who knew him. Those who knew him know that there was nobody who enjoyed the "fruit of the vine" more than he did. He had a playful whit and was always ready to share a special story with whoever would listen.

Although he will be missed, we want you to sleep well, sweet Sewell, for you are now in a place" ... where neither moth nor rust consume and where thieves do not break in and steal."
