Obituary for SARAH ANN BURLEY

Sarah Ann Burley, the 7th child of the Late Calvert Wesley Burley and Josephine Ann Ennis Burley departed this earthly life on Monday, January 16, 2017 at the age of 61.

Sarah, affectionately known as “Ann” or “Sarah B.” was a 1971 graduate of Southern Senior High School. She continued her education at Fleet Business School in Annapolis, Maryland and was a 2009 graduate of Sojourner Douglass College, graduating with the Magna Cum Laude honor with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. This was in fact one of the happiest days of her life and a true testament of her will to succeed.

Ann had an agape love for her church family and Pastor. She was a lifelong and dedicated member of Union United Methodist Church. She served as the Chairperson of the Administrative Board and Membership Secretary, always striving to perfect this position. In addition, she faithfully served on the Usher Board, served as the Communion Steward and was a certified Lay Speaker. Ann was a member of the Women’s Church Choir, and sang along the side of her brother, sister and close friends with “The Bell Singers” until their health began to fail. Often times you could find her reading the bible, listening to gospel music or sharing a word of prayer with and for the family.

Sarah was a woman of many strengths and talents yet very humble and meek. Sarah being the youngest of the Burley children was afforded many opportunities that her elders were not, and she did not take this lightly. While continuing her education, she was gainfully employed as an Accountant Technician for the Community Action Agency of Annapolis and gained her Class B operator license providing transit service to the City of Annapolis. Ann was also known for and loved by her Kmart family, where she was employed as a Senior Customer Service Representative and furthered her career portfolio by obtaining employment as an Automotive Customer Service Specialist at Sam's Club of Annapolis.

Ann was loved and spoiled by the entire family and she bestowed that same love upon her children and grandchildren. Five months ago, the Lord saw fit to bless Ann with a great-grandson, King. Ann loved visiting her favorite restaurants when her baby boy would come into town or sharing a good home cooked meal with her daughter and granddaughters.

Ann loved to spend quality time with her family, you could often find her visiting local churches with her nieces and nephews, sharing a good joke, story or attending a family gathering. Family members would stop by to visit because she was great listener always offering great advice. She loved the summer months, sitting outside enjoying the weather with her big straw hat on while enjoying a couple dozen of crabs with a cold Pepsi. Ann enjoyed tending to her tomato garden and was so proud of the “4” good tomatoes that would appear on the vines. “Ms. Burley” as she was known by all of the daycare children next door would love to stop by and speak to her, the children brought so much joy to her day.

The family will always cherish the memories of this pass Thanksgiving dinner shared with Sarah B. as she was rooting loudly for a Dallas Cowboys win and joined the family in a “dance”. It’s those memories, and the ones of her chasing down the school buses to get the children to school that will bring comfort for the days ahead. If you were blessed to be a part of Ann’s 61 year journey, you truly have plenty to be grateful and thankful for.

Sarah leaves to cherish a lifetime of love and memories to her children, Roy (Andy) Contee and Mary Burley; 4 granddaughters, Vanessa, Sali and Mia Contee, and Marissa Cottom and great grandson, King Stevens. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Sarah will be sorely missed by her Union-Sollers-Adams-Mt. Zion-Peters-Carters church families, and Pastor.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, the late Calvert & Josephine Burley; 4 sisters, Agnes Pindell, Hettie Bell, Mary Dandridge, and Carrie Spriggs and 2 brothers, George and Calvert Burley.
