Obituary for ROBERT A. "BOBBY" GRAY
Robert Augusta Gray (Bobby), was born February 1, 1938 to the late Major and Virginia Gray. He departed this life on July 7, 2017 at his home in Washington, DC with his loving wife Irene, at his side.
Bobby attended Mt. Hope Elementary School in Sunderland, MD and W. Sampson High School, graduating with the Class of 1956.
Bobby played both football and basketball in high school and after his school years he played baseball with the Prince Frederick Hustlers and Owings Eagles. He was an avid sports Fan. He loved cooking and entertaining and was especially known for his "world famous cakes", which he made certain was included in every family function menu. He loved watching sports and reading the entire Washington Post on a daily basis. Bobby was employed for over 50 years as a Shop Steward and Foreman with the Laborers International Union in Washington, DC and Virginia.
Bobby's Christian journey began at an earlier age at St. Edmonds United Methodist Church and later at Mt. Hope United Methodist Church. Bobby was joined in holy matrimony with Irene Eldridge Gray on April 9, 1999. They were an inseparable couple with a special name for one another "Boo and Boo."
Bobby was preceded in death by; his parents, Major and Virginia Gray; Grandparents, Ella Greene Holland Chambers, James Holland, Hamilton Chambers, Jeanette Jones Gray and Tommy Gray; siblings, Kermit F. Gray, Elsie Rosalie Stepney Bryant, Virginia Thomas, Robert Stepney and Alma (Billy D) Broome; Niece, Novella Gray and a host of other relatives and friends.
Bobby leaves to cherish his fond memories; his loving wife, Irene; children; Ralph Gray, Sr., Robert A. Gray, Jr., Deborah Gray and DuShawn Gray Barnes; Brother; Dr. C. Vernon Gray; 12 stepchildren; 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law; Rev. Sandra Trice Gray and Corine Gray Reed; daughter-in-laws; Velma and Gale Gray; son-in-Law, Lewis Barnes; Godmother, Viola Foote; Godson, Edwin S. Stewart; special friends, Joseph Jones, Sr. and James Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews and loved ones that will miss him dearly.
