Obituary for REBECCA ANN LINCOLN
Rebecca Ann Lincoln was born September 11, 1939 to John H. (Sleepy) and Mary Etta Smith. God called her home to glory on April 8, 2016.
Rebecca received her education in Saint Mary’s County schools and graduated from Jarboesville High School in Lexington Park, Maryland on June 8, 1956. She attended Bowie State Teachers College in Bowie, Maryland and earned her Bachelors of Science degree on June 2, 1962. Her first teaching assignment was in the Saint Mary’s County school system where she taught from 1962 until October 31, 1967 at Ridge Elementary and George Washington Carver Elementary schools.
She married Bobby Lincoln in 1965. They lived in southern Maryland until the Navy transferred him for duty in Italy. Rebecca traveled with her husband. When they returned to the states, they settled down in Arlington, Virginia and she began teaching at Barcroft Elementary School (Arlington County). Rebecca moved to Fairfax City, Virginia around 1976 where she resided until her death. She retired from the Arlington County school system in July 2001.
Although she lived in Northern Virginia for most of her adult life, Rebecca never forgot the valuable spiritual lessons she learned at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in St. Inigoes. It has always been her church home.
Becky, as she is affectionately called by her sisters, enjoyed music and she really loved dancing. When she wasn’t dancing to the music, her favorite thing (especially on holidays) was sitting contentedly with her legs crossed, in the midst of her family talking and moving around her.
She was pre-deceased by her mother and her father, and by one sister, Cleo M. Smith. She leaves to cherish her memory four loving sisters: Jean M. Sykes, Atlanta, GA; Lorraine Barnes, St. Inigoes, MD; Mary C. Gable, Los Lunas, NM; Juanita Butler, Mechanicsville, MD; one brother-in-law, Bernard Barnes, Jr.; and eleven nieces and six nephews.
Although Rebecca had no natural children of her own, God blessed her with many children. She was a dedicated teacher-- dedicating her life to educating young people and she excelled at what she did. As one of her colleague’s said, “Her students respected Ms. Lincoln and they learned a lot from her because they knew she didn’t play.” Rebecca very seldom missed a day at her school because she loved her pupils and because she said it was just too much work to get the kids back in line after they had a substitute!
She goes to her rest looking back on a job well-done. On April 8, God called to her saying, “Well done, Rebecca, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful with a few things. Come and share your master’s happiness. Come home and rest now, my child.”
