Obituary for OVERTON JOSEPH HAWKINS
Overton Joseph Hawkins was born July 24,1946 in Prince Frederick, Maryland. He entered into eternal rest on July 13, 2016 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick, Maryland.
Overton attended and graduated from the public schools of Calvert County. He was a loyal fan of the Washington Redskins. He entered the US Army on 27 September 1966. He deployed overseas to Vietnam for a year under United States Pacific Command as a RADAR System Operator and provided cutting-edge detection, identification, and tracking of ground targets. Overton was subsequently awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal and one foreign award - the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. On 26 September 1969, he was honorably discharged as a Specialist, promotable to Sergeant (SP4 (P)). He was employed by Clark Construction as a Cement Finisher for over thirty years at Local 891 and retired in 2009.
Overton was a kind-hearted and loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He was a selfless man who would go out of his way to help others, and he loved spending time with his family and friends. He shared a friendship with Leon Jones since the 3rd grade. Overton was a devoted member of Mount Olive United Methodist Church.
Overton leaves to cherish and share his memories, a devoted and loving wife, Cynthia Hawkins; mother, Mary Hawkins; two daughters: Felisha Hunter and LaShawn Anderson (John); five grandchildren: Jordan Hunter, Darian, Kayla, Camryn and Angel Anderson; one sister, Peggy Hawkins; four brothers: Wilson Hawkins (Mary), Melvin Hawkins (Bonnie), Floyd Hawkins, and Charles Hawkins (Joyce); sister and brother-in-laws: Arthur Jones (Thelma), Robert Jones (Dolores), Diane Stats (Jesse), Leon Jones, Cornell Jones, William Brooks, Patricia Gray (Martin), Marchelle Jones, Ruthia Jones, and Joan Jones. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and caring friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Overton Hawkins; siblings: Ivon Brooks and Carlton Hawkins; father and mother-in-law, Norval and Mildred Jones; son-in-law, Elijah Hunter III; brother and sister-in-law, Marvin Jones and Laverne Jones.
