Obituary for Margaret Bishop

Margaret Priscilla Emerson Bishop, 87 of Chesapeake Beach, MD, died Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Larkin Chase Rehabilitation Center, Bowie, MD.She was born September 9, 1921 to the late Mason Emerson and the late Priscilla Riggs Emerson. Margaret was educated in the Calvert County Public Schools. On July 9, 1950, Margaret was joined in holy matrimony with her long time love and life partner Howard Bishop. They were not blessed with children from this union but they were mother and father to so many other family members, nieces, nephews, and many members of Mt. Hope Church. For years she worked for the Miller family in Silver Spring, MD as a domestic engineer. She moved to Washington, D.C. at a very young age and stayed there until her husband retired. They then moved back to Calvert County to stay.Margaret was a long time active member of Mt. Hope UM Church. She sang with the Senior and Mass Choirs and the LG Women's Ensemble when it was active. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Women and once served as the treasurer for this organization. She worked and served diligently on the Kitchen Committee until her feet began to bother her. Even then she would sit and do whatever she could from her seat. Margaret was a hard worker no matter what the task; you couldn't hold her down. She could be heard singing her favorite selection, "Standing in the Safety Zone" with her husband and even as a solo when her husband passed. No one could quite sing this song the way she did. Her favorite sayings were "I don't know" and "What are they going to do next?"She was a longtime friend and one of the best traveling buddies for Cozzette Gray. Margaret enjoyed riding with Cozzette and Sis. Lucy Coates, until Lucy passed. The three of them were known around town as "The Golden Girls." Then it was just Cozzette and Margaret on the road. She will always hold a special place in Cozzette's heart. She leaves to cherish her memory one brother, Charles Emerson, three sisters-in-law, Edith Emerson, and Mary and Rebecca Bishop; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Bishop, sisters, Rebecca, Hattie, Bertha, and Myrtle and one brother, John Richard Emerson.
