Obituary for Mabel Jones

On the morning of January 1, 2009, the angel of silence entered a room at Georgetown University Hospital and called Mabel Rosie Jones home to her final resting place, after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Eleanor and Joseph Gray. She was preceded in death by sisters Ruth Reed and Hazel Berry; brothers Julius, Cornelius and Louis Gray. Her soul winged its flight from this world of sin, sorrow and pain, to a place of eternal rest.
She was born February 15, 1936 in Paris, Calvert County, Maryland. She was educated in the Public Schools of Calvert County. She was employed as a cook by the Rod N Reel Restaurant for over 20 years. She also worked several years as a Domestic Engineer. For health reasons she retired from labor and became a full-time housewife, mother, grand and great-grandmother.
At an early age, she attended Coopers United Methodist Church with her parents. She became a member of Wards Memorial United Methodist Church on November 14, 1976 and served on many committees, including Hospitality, Membership, Nominations and Personnel and Outreach. For many years she was a devoted Usher, until her health would not allow her to stand. As an Usher she enjoyed attending Usher conventions and taking the youth ushers to conventions. She was also a devoted member of the United Methodist Women.
Although she struggled many years with health issues, she was always there for her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking for her family and church and had no problem telling you how to cook. She loved to bake and always had requests for her homemade chocolate and pound cakes; bread pudding, raisin dumplings and rice pudding. You could always find a meal at the family home, but was not allowed to take a brown bag home, per Mr. Jones.
Mabel loved gospel music, good preaching and Al Greene.
Mabel leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of 54 years, Lambertine Jones, seven children, Robert Jones, Sr., Diane (Tyrone) King, Delores, Helen, Lambertine, Jr., Ellis (Dolores), and Linda Jones; 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; two brothers, John and Edward Gray; one aunt Elizabeth Wills; 14 sisters-in-laws; 4 brother-in-laws and a host of other relatives and friends.
