Obituary for MYRTLE CORDELIA SMITH
Myrtle Cordelia Smith was born on November 24, 1926 to the late Mervin and Joethel Jones in Calvert County, MD. On Thursday, June 20, 2013, Myrtle departed this life peacefully at her home, in Huntingtown, MD. “Mertie” as she was affectionately known to her friends and family, was educated in the Calvert County public school system. She was married to the late Hamilton Smith for 49 years. She was the loving mother of eight children; six girls and two boys. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Personal Savior and was baptized at a early age at St. Edmonds United Methodist Church. On May 20, 2012 she joined the Alexander Memorial Baptist Church, where she was an active member who attended Bible Study, Sunday School, and Worship Services on a consistent basis. Mertie was an avid bingo player, which used to be one of her favorite past times before rededicating her life to Christ. She loved to cook and was especially known for her famous crab balls and crab cakes. She also loved to travel. She loved her children, both in her family as well as in the community. Mertie was called “Grandma” by many and was like a second mother to Gerald Donovan. Mertie was employed at Rod-N-Reel Restaurant, Chesapeake, MD for 46 years as a cook. She was dedicated and committed to her job. Mertie was a hard worker and imparted her work ethics in her children by allowing them to work beside her in the restaurant. Myrtle leaves to cherish her memories; eight children; Francy Tyler; Fern (Carl) Coates; Pearl Smith; Edmonia Garrett; Hamilton (Katherine) Smith; Rachel (Larry) Jones; Garry (Helen) Smith; and Santo (Jesse) Plater; two sisters; Pauline Fletcher and Grace Booth; one brother, Crispin (Sarah) Jones; three special cousins; Darlene Rawlings, Guy Pratt and Joethel Brooks; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Jones; twenty grandchildren; Wanda, Kim, Joi, Vanessa, Jeral, Kevyn, Daryl, Angela, Felicia, Shantelle, Amber, Ronnie, Kim, Tracey, Tela, Larry Jr., Tron, Jesse Jr., Sean and Jessica; twenty four great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
