GRIEF & HEALING
affirmations to uplift & help you through
each stage of the grieving process.
Myrtle Beatrice Patterson was born in Huntingtown, Maryland, October 4, 1919 to
the late Preston Garfield Jones and Elizabeth Harvey Jones. She departed this life on
January 1, 2018 in her home in Huntingtown.
Myrtle was educated in Calvert County public schools, attending Huntingtown
Elementary and Central Colored High School. As a young woman, she went to Washington,
DC and worked as a domestic worker. She was married to the late Carlise Thomas,
and from that union, daughter Patricia was born.
Myrtle married the late Will E. Patterson June 27, 1947. They lived in Washington,
DC where Will had a trucking business. Myrtle assisted by working as his office manager,
scheduling work assignments, and doing the payroll for the employees. Myrtle joined St.
John's CME Church in Washington, DC where she was a member of many organizations.
She was notable for co-chairing with other dedicated women of St. John's, sponsoring
annual trips to places like New York around Christmas and New Year holidays. During
her years in Washington, DC, she was a diligent worker and volunteer who assisted at
nursing homes, in the District of Columbia's Junior Village orphanage (once named
Industrial Home School for Colored Children); and at the March on Washington, where she
and her late sister Margaret prepared and served food.
In 1973 Myrtle moved back to Huntingtown and built a home with Will. She made
Patuxent United Methodist Church her new church home. She tirelessly continued her
spirited service at Patuxent as a trustee, served on the Pastor Parish committee, became a
member of the United Methodist Women, and numerous other organizations. She was a
dedicated member of the Board of Child Care for many years helping to organize a very
important fundraising event, The Salad Fiesta. In addition to the time she gave to her
church organizations, Myrtle also served as a volunteer for the Calvert Memorial Hospital
Auxiliary. Myrtle was a lifetime member of the NAACP.
In addition to extensive volunteerism and generously giving to many organizations,
Myrtle was also known for her baking, particularly her pound cakes. Many family and
friends would often put in their orders for a dessert.
Myrtle has been blessed and enjoyed regular visits and conversations with her
sisters Bessie Moore (96), Alice Sewell (92), and friends Darlene Long and Russell Costley.
Myrtle is survived by her only daughter, three grandchildren: Charles Kinzer, Kathy
Kinzer-Downs (Lamont Downs), Doreen Nehanda; two great-grandchildren: Marcus
Downs and Xavier Downs, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. In her last days,
Myrtle was surrounded by her excellent care-giving team, immediate family, and
wonderful hospice care.
