Obituary for MELVIN EUGENE SPRIGGS, SR.
Melvin Eugene Spriggs, Sr., was born August 8, 1939 to the late Morris J. and Dorothy E. Spriggs in Jewel, Maryland. He departed this life on July 26, 2016 after a brief illness.
Melvin was educated at Wiley H. Bates High School. At a young age he began employment in construction. Gifted with his hands and in mechanics, he began operating small construction equipment and moved onto become a heavy equipment operator. Melvin was employed for many years and retired from Joseph Canova and Son Excavating Inc. He worked 40 plus hours per week, 52 weeks a year. Melvin was highly recognized for his work ethic and was such a valued employee that his union dues were paid by the company. Melvin operated super jumbo-sized earth movers that were over two stories tall. He worked on many major construction projects in the Washington Metropolitan area. He was accurate with making sure the grade was right and on point! Even though he worked full time, Melvin purchased a bulldozer and dump truck and started his own side business known as Melvin E. Spriggs Excavation. Melvin was always a hard-worker, loved to keep busy, and could fix almost anything. 1n retirement, he provided snow removal services for the Maryland State Highway Administration.
Melvin was gifted with a green thumb and grew a vegetable garden every year. He was very particular about his vehicles and his yard. The lawn was always green with a specific cut pattern that no one else could duplicate. And No Parking or Walking on the Grass!
Melvin married Margaret Wilkerson and from that union, Melvin Jr. was born. Later he married Carrie Burley and the two had a lasting relationship until her passing. Melvin was hardworking, strong and gentle, always willing to help whenever you needed him. With a beautiful smile, he cracked jokes and said what he meant and meant what he said, giving wisdom in his own special way.
Melvin leaves to cherish his memories: his sons, Melvin, Jr., Wrightson, Brian, Dexter Spriggs (Sharon); daughter, Zoe Rawlings, fifteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brothers Benjamin (Ozelious), Joseph (Thelma), Morris ((Helen R.) Sherman (Helen L.);sisters, Laura Spriggs and Susie Duppins; companion and friend, Nancy Creek, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Melvin was proceeded in death by his wife Carrie, son David Spriggs, granddaughter Dominque Spriggs, and brother James William Henry Spriggs.
