Obituary for MAURICE M. CREEK, SR.
Maurice Melvin Creek, Sr. was born on March 23, 1923 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland to the late Horace Creek and Helen Chase Creek. In the early morning hours on Saturday, November 10, 2018, God sent his angel and called Maurice home.
Maurice Melvin Creek attended school in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. As a child, Maurice was an active member of Coopers United Methodist Church.
On June 9, 1945, Maurice married the love of his life, Helen Martha Contee. From this union there were a total of 9 children, Gloria, Barbara, Maurice, Jr., Margaret, Wilbur, Elmer, Mary, Dorrine and Angela. For many years, Maurice lived with his family on Jewell Road in Anne Arundel County, where he was a sharecropper on Sansbury Farm. During the off season, Maurice worked with Toffer Construction Company. Because of his large family, Maurice was able to successfully raise tobacco, pigs, hogs, chickens and cows. Many times when in the tobacco field, Maurice would allow his grandchildren to sit on the tobacco load as it was being transported from the field to the barn. He use to always say ... "Don't tear the tobacco," but would allow us to imagine that we were on a roller coaster ride as they dumped the tobacco load in the barn. In 1979, Maurice moved his family from Jewell Road to Ward Chapel Road in Calvert County. Maurice was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He ensured that he provided for his family. Maurice worked many years for Ellis Restoration and retired from that company in the late 1990s. Maurice always liked to have fun. When the grandkids were younger, he use to always sit in the step and chase and scare them as they walked by, all because he wanted to make them laugh. Maurice would always welcome his favorite food "Oysters." He enjoyed family functions, such as, Thanksgiving and Christmas and spending time with his family. Maurice also loved to play cards with his brother-in-law Wilbur Contee (deceased) and sister-in-law Sarah Contee (deceased). They could be up half the night in a Bid Whist or Spades card game. Maurice was just a fun loving kind of guy. He loved chocolate chip cookies and would sneak in a few with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever he could.
After marriage, Maurice joined Peter's United Methodist Church, where he was a faithful member. Over the years, Maurice was active in many ministries in Peter's UM Church. He was a Trustee, Member of the United Methodist Men, Usher Board member, Building Fund Committee member, Guitar player for the Peter's United Methodist Men's choir, and member of the Peter's Senior Choir. We loved to hear Maurice sing, "I'LL BE SOMEWHERE LISTENING FOR MY NAME." The harmony in his voice made the song even more beautiful.
Maurice had a very kind, peaceful, calm and loving spirit and he loved to be the jokester. On many occasions when visiting him at home, you could find him sitting in his special chair, instigating in the Tri-ominos game going on at the other table with his wife and daughters, all in fun. Maurice always liked to keep you laughing. Even towards the end of Maurice's life, he remained playful, telling as many jokes as he could and making everyone laugh. Through all the pain, he stayed peaceful and he didn't complain.
