Obituary for MAURICE ENOCH JOHNSON
On October 28, 1951 Maurice Enoch Johnson was the first born of eight surviving children to Enoch and the late Lelia Johnson in Calvert County, Maryland. On Sunday April 19, 2015 at 7:20 p.m. his battle with lung cancer came to an end as God softly whispered in his ear "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
In 1960, the Johnson Family moved from Calvert County to Mitchellville, Maryland, when Maurice was a little boy and there he attended public school. Maurice was a graduate of Bowie High School and continued his education at Bowie State Community College. In his late teenage years God blessed Maurice with a beautiful baby girl "Latonya Johnson".
Maurice was a loving family man and he got along with whomever graced his presence. He devoted his life to enjoying his gardening for what he called his Ponderosa, cooking watching his westerns and socializing with people. All these moments I'm sure he has spent with each and every one of us.
Maurice aka "Shaka Zulu" had so many cool nicknames like "Odabo Jack" and in his school he was so cool and sharp that he was called the "Duke of Earl" and "Reese". You may even know a few others but one thing we know is that we all loved hearing him say "Que pasa" meaning: "what's up" when we called him by his nickname. He would also ask "Am I black enough for ya?" as we would all laugh and giggle.
In his adult life Maurice moved to Sands Road in Lothian Maryland where he found a job and began to work for Pumphrey Trash Services. In the 1980s Maurice met his sweetheart and life partner Catherine Blanchard whom he live with until he was hospitalized on April 16, 2015.
He was preceded in death by: his mother, Lelia (Doll-baby); brother, Marvin; grandparents, Enoch & Goldie Hall; Gurley & Carrie Johnson; one great nephew, one great niece, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. He leaves to mourn & cherish his memories: daughter ,Latonya Johnson; father, Enoch (pop); sisters, Susie & Tyenecco; brothers, Danny, Alvin (Loretta), Calvin, & Rodney. He also leaves to mourn, Catherine Blanchard, his special and loving partner and special friend Purnell Mallen.
