Obituary for MATTHEW W. TAYLOR

Matthew William Taylor, affectionately known as “Captain Taylor” or "Mac" was born on May 9, 1928 to the late Guy and Lillian Louise Jefferson Taylor. On September 20, 2014, after a lengthy illness, Matthew quietly slipped away with his wife by his side.

He was educated in the Calvert County Public Schools. At an early age Matthew discovered his passion, while working along-side his father on the water. On October 28, 1947, he married Edith Bishop . Out of this 66 year union, six daughters were born. Matthew worked for Patuxent Naval Base as a Sheet Metal Mechanic from 1950 - 1983. In 1956 he became a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. He sang on the United Methodist Men's and the Intermediate choir.

In 1964, he launched his first boating excursion on the Miss Maxine. He named his boat after his daughter Maxine, who was his shadow on land and sea. Maxine and his grandsons faithfully served as his shipmates. In the early 70's, Matthew obtained a Captain's License. After his business expanded, he purchased a larger vessel, naming her "Miss Maxine II.” Captain Taylor spent countless hours on the Chesapeake Bay after his retirement.

Matthew enjoyed watching western movies and wrestling. He was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and Dallas Cowboys. Matthew took an active role in helping to raise his grandchildren. Matthew often lovingly threatened his grandchildren with a switch he called "Sweet Lucy." He would ask, "Do you want me to get Sweet Lucy... well, behave then."

Matthew was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: James, George, Gordon, Charles Taylor, Hester Johnson, Bertha Jefferson, Beula Reynolds, and Sarah Saunders; son-in-law, William Henry Wallace; brother-in-law, James Bishop (Pauline); and nephew, Glenn Taylor. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Edith; his daughters: Lois Beverly, Valerie Carr (George), Nordeen Wallace, Hester Taylor, Maxine Graham (James, Sr.), and Spring Taylor; his brothers: Warren Taylor (Paula) and Wallen Taylor; his sister-in-law, Audrey Bishop; his adopted children: Michael Bell, Laura Moore and Brenda Jones; 15 grand-children, 28 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren; god-daughter, Deltrisha Boyd; and special friend, Albert Mackall. Matthew will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
