Obituary for MARY V. HAWKINS
Mary Viola Hawkins, was the fourth child of fifteen children, born to the late John Albert King and Frances Evelyn Stewart King on March 13, 1921 in Barstow, Maryland.
She attended Calvert County public schools and graduated in 1940 from W.S. Brooks High School. After High School, she enrolled in Margaret Murray Washington Vocational Trade School and graduated with a business license in cosmetology.
Mary married the late Overton Wilson Hawkins on January 14, 1944. This union was blessed with eight children.
Mary was a devoted member of Mount Olive United Methodist Church. She served in many church leadership roles including the Chairperson of the Worship Committee and the Administrative Council. As a humble and devoted servant, Mary assisted the church by; organizing and coordinating fundraisers, singing in the church choir, leading the morning prayer and supporting the ministries of the church with words of encouragement. She also became the Mother of the church.
Mary was active in the local community and a loyal American Legion Auxiliary member at Gray-Ray Post 220 for over 54 years. During that time, she served as the president for over five years and she also served as the treasury.
Mary was very compassionate, giving, strong, understanding, and had a warm spirit. She helped raise many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. During the holidays, Mary loved to cook large meals for her family and bake delicious cakes, cookies, and brownies for dessert; her brownies became everyone's favorite.
She leaves to cherish and share her memories, four loving children; one daughter, Peggy Hawkins and three sons, Melvin (Bonnie), Charles (Joyce), and Floyd Hawkins; one daughter-in-law, Cynthia Hawkins; one goddaughter, Betsy White Willet; four sisters, Frances Hutchins, Rachel Smith, Margaret Mason (John), and Florence Marshall; two brothers, Norman and Robert King (Ethelene); twenty-two grandchildren, forty-four great-grandchildren, fifteen great great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by four of her children and their spouse in parentheses; Ivon (Billy) Brooks, Overton, Wilson (Mary), and Carlton Hawkins; one grandchild, Floyd Hawkins Jr.; six siblings, Rosie King, Alice (Norwood) Seay/es, Irene (Benjamin) White, James, Theodore (Ada), and Horace (Geneva) King, and three-brothers-in-law, Washington Hutchins, Eugene Smith, and Wallace Marshall.
