Obituary for MARY LUCILLE STEWART

Mary Lucille Stewart was born to the late Margaret and Bernard Brown on December 26, 1934, in Calvert County, Maryland. After a long stay at George Washington University Hospital, Lucille died peacefully in her home on October 9, 2015. She was 80 years old.

Lucille was united in holy matrimony to Hilmur Stewart in 1951. Out of that union, nine children were born and a tenth was later unofficially adopted - Paulette Parker.

Lucille's personality is best described as quiet and deliberate. She was respectful and
reserved, never seeking attention. Lucille was committed to serving others, with her
greatest passion being to support her children, grandchildren, and those around her. In
a recent letter, she reminisced about how much she loved and missed serving her
family by cooking, cleaning. and washing dishes before there was a dishwasher.

After raising the majority of her children, she went to work as a cook and dishwasher at Rustic Farms. She loved it there! She later worked for several years as a cook at a local Bed & Breakfast and as a janitor for the Calvert County School System.

In addition to serving her family, she also loved to serve in her church community. She was a member of Brooks United Methodist Church and sung with the Collin's Gospel Choir and later the Gospel Choir. Additionally, she served as the first sexton for the church.

As we honor the matriarch of our family, we also acknowledge that this is the first time in our family history that we have only 4 generations of living Stewarts. It was Lucille's desire that her children support each other. Perhaps that is why God allowed her to have a series of children to include: one girl followed by two boys three times totaling nine children. It was always her thought that it was the responsibility of her girls to take care of their two boys.

Later in life, it was not unusual to hear Lucille call her children ducks. She would often say, "I have nine ducks." It caught on with the children to the point where it was not uncommon for them to refer to themselves as Duck Number, followed by the number identifying their birth order. The ducks were so fond of this that when they visited, one in particularly would enthusiastically say, ''I'm the baby, I'm the baby!"

Lucille leaves to cherish her memories nine ducks (children): Phyllis, Charles, Ronald
(Lavette), Margaret "Peggy" (Alonzo), David 'Ty" (Connie), Hilmur, Tammy (Perry),
Michael, and Marvin. Lucille also leaves to mourn, her cousin, James Straiten who was raised with her, 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.

Preceding her in death were her parents Margaret and Bernard Brown; husband, Hilmur Stewart; brother, Calvin Brown; great uncle, Wheeler Straiten, daughter, Paulette Parker, and grandson, John"JJ" Thomas.
