Obituary for MARY LONG
Mary Gertrude Long was born to the late Henry and Mary Long on January 23, 1933 in Huntingtown, Maryland. She was the second (2) of twelve (12) children. Mary was peacefully called home to be with the Lord on September 9, 2018. Mary was a resident of Calvert County Maryland and lived in the northern county for many years with her parents and other siblings. She established the nickname "Segown", along with many others such as, Yockie, Stormie, Rockie, and Me. While living with her family she worked diligently babysitting her nieces and nephews. She was always demanding they bring her bubble gum. Mary exercised her gifts of cooking, doing the laundry, and spending countless late night hours canning fruits and vegetables with her mother. In August 1994, Mary relocated to Port Republic Maryland where she resided with her sister Goldie and her husband William Hawkins. At times she was able to attend her brother's church, Bishop Stephen Long of Zion Church of Jesus Christ. Mary enjoyed listening to gospel music, and it soon became a habit for her to stomp her feet singing and praising God. She also enjoyed the many visitors that would drop in. Each and every time a man was present she would say, "that's my boyfriend." She had many! Mary sometimes would just stand in front of the open door watching the rain come down. She would say, "God's work." She was always a giver. She kept a stash of candy that she would offer her visitors or her great nieces and nephews. She kept a smile on her face and normally always was in good spirits. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mary Long; two (2) sisters, Mildred Thomas (Benjamin), Helen Brooks (George); and one (1) brother, George Roosevelt Long. Mary leaves to cherish her memories, her son Howard Long (Thelma), and step great granddaughter Brynia Brown; four (4) sisters, Goldie Hawkins (William, Sr.) Estelle Brown, Ethel & Dorothy Long, four (4) brothers; William, Raymond (Gladys), Robert, & Bishop Steven Long (Mary), one (1) uncle; Joe Brown (Glenda), three (3) aunts; Willa Cook (Irvin), Peggy & Mildred Stepney, three devoted nieces; Joyce and Mary Hawkins, and Barbara Brown, a devoted great niece; Asia Butler and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
