Obituary for MARY ELLEN JONES
Mary Ellen Thomas was born on March 25th 1946 to the late Clarence & Annie Thomas. She was blessed to be in a family of nine siblings; eight brothers to watch over her while growing up and one sister to cherish for the rest of her life. Mary lived a life of simplicity; giving thanks in all things to the good Lord' and providing love and care to her family. Mary was a true native of Calvert County as her entire life was spent there. She received her education in the public schools, worked several occupations, raised her children, met and married her husband, Gregory Jones, without ever leaving the County. In spite of the many circumstances she endured during her life, Mary chose not to complain. She was unselfish and willing to lend a hand wherever there was a need. For many, she provided care services, free of charge. If someone was sick, she provided aid to them by cooking, washing or cleaning their house from top to bottom. If you were hungry, you would not stay that way in her presence because she would surely find something to offer you to eat. What a great legacy to leave for generations to come; to be thankful to God for everything, and to love your neighbor as yourself.Believing that true love transcends all barriers, she married Gregory on September 2, 2000. To him, she was his precious jewel. She met all the qualifications of a woman of virtue. She made sure that there was nothing lacking in the home. Anything Gregory, the children or grandchildren needed, she tried her best to provide it.Mary was a hard worker! Her first job was at the Calvert County courthouse where she worked as a custodian. She also provided domestic services for others. She was an excellent cook. Greater than any chef, her potato salad and perfectly golden brown fried chicken was second to none. For many years, hundreds of people were recipients of her culinary skills while dining at the Surrey Inn Restaurant in Huntingtown. She was also a loving in-home care giver to the elderly, and until the day of her transition, she worked as a substitute food service worker for the Calvert County Public School system.Mary was a wonderful person, and she will be missed by all who knew her. She leaves to cherish her memory and further her legacy of service, a loving husband, Gregory Jones of Huntingtown, MD, two children; Joyce Marie Thomas and Robert Coates, Jr.; five grandchildren, Shakaye Creek, Chardae Coates, Trevon Parker, Jayden and Keejan Coates; three great-grandchildren, Shakeya Mackall, Destiny Dandridge and Jazani Jefferson; one godchild, Tyrone Jones, Jr.; four siblings, Charlotte Jones of Huntingtown, MD, William Thomas of Baltimore, MD, Isaac Thomas of Oxon Hill, MD and Charles Thomas of Prince Frederick, MD. Her remaining brothers; Raymond, Clarence (Dudie), Gator, Mack and Leroy Thomas preceded her in death. Mary leaves her mother-in-law, Carlise Brooks, six sisters-in-law, Clarice Brooks, Delphine, Myrtle and Madeline Jones, Louise and Rochelle Smith; five brother-in-laws: Lloyd, Lorenzo, James, Glenwood, and Linwood; one great aunt, Mary Hawkins of Prince Frederick, MD, two special friends, Janice Hawkins and Cordelia Mackall, and a whole host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
