Obituary for MARY EDITH SPRIGGS WHITTINGTON

Mary Edith Virginia Tasker was born on May 15, 1915, in Anne Arundel County, MD to the late Henry and Fannie Tasker. Mary answered the Master’s call and moved to her eternal home on Friday, April 18, 2014 around 11:00pm at home with her family.

Mary, who was affectionately known as “Ma, Momma, Grandma, and Grandma Mary”, was joined in Holy Matrimony to James Ellsworth Spriggs in 1931. From this union they were blessed with nine children: Lawrence, Victoria “Toye”, Robert, Everett “Ervie”, William “Poose”, Henry, Walter, Frank and Genevieve “Genny”. Along with their nine children, they also raised two grandchildren; Larry Spriggs, Sr. and Darlene Edwards until his death in May 1974.

Mary joined Peter’s United Methodist Church in 1940. She served as a Communion Steward for 25 years and was a member and the Treasurer for the United Methodist Women. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 62:12 and her favorite hymns were “He is Sweet I Know” and “Anyway You Bless Me Lord”. She faithfully attended church until her health declined.

In the late 60’s Mary worked as a domestic worker for Virginia Claggett and continued in that capacity until 1980. She loved cooking for her family, spoiling them with her famous rice pudding and raisin dumplings. After leaving her domestic work behind, she started canning goods such as applesauce, green beans, beets, peaches, cha-cha pickles, tomatoes and whatever came out of her garden.

In 1981, Mary married Daniel Whittington and they enjoyed many good years together until his death.

Mary cherished the times when her sister Irene would come and spend the weekend and fellowship with her at church.

Mary enjoyed attending the South County Senior Citizens Center every Wednesday, where she started making quits and other crafts. Many family members received her hand-made quits and craft as gifts. In her spare time Mary enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She looked forward to her Monday night visits with Barbara and Margaret Young. They would play Trouble along with Purnell for many hours anticipating who would be victorious. She also loved playing Trouble with other family members. She loved playing Dominoes with her sister-in-law Carrie Hall whom she shared a sisterly bond. She also liked to watch Family Feud and Court TV Shows.
Mary leaves fond memories to her two daughters: Victoria “Toye” and Genevieve “Genny” Spriggs, one sister: Helen Irene Wallace, forty grandchildren; fifty-six great – grandchildren; twenty-seven great-great grandchildren; four daughters-in-law: Shirley, Valerie, Madeline and Carolyn, one sister- in- law Carrie Hall, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She truly loved spending time with Jeanette Hawkins, Annette Spriggs, Joseph Spriggs, Barbara and Margaret Young.

Mary was preceded in death by two husbands: Ellsworth Spriggs and Daniel Whittington, seven sons: Lawrence, Robert, Everett, Henry, William, Walter, Frank, two sisters: Adele Creek and Anna Laura Tasker, one brother: Albert Jackson, three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mary will be sorely missed by all.
