GRIEF & HEALING
affirmations to uplift & help you through
each stage of the grieving process.
Mary Beatrice Sesker, lovingly known as “Bea” to her family and friends, was born on July 21, 1925 at Freedman’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was one of ten children born to the late Raymond and Isabelle Smith. In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the John and Arloine Mandrin Hospice House in Harwood, Maryland, God in his infinite wisdom called her home to eternal rest at the age of 92.
Bea attended Saint Mary of the Assumption School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. She was employed at Andrew’s Manor, then Prince George’s County Public Schools for twenty-eight years, until her retirement on May 1, 1990.
At the tender age of nineteen, Bea was united in holy matrimony to Henry Leon Sesker on February 4, 1944. From this union came nine children; six girls and three boys.
She was a devout Catholic and a lifetime member of Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Bea attended mass every Sunday, as well as the Sacrament of Reconciliation. On any given day, you could find her praying the Rosary; she had quite the collection of prayer beads. As the years passed, her deteriorating health would no longer allow her to physically attend church. Bea would study her bible, pray daily and occasionally receive home visits from the church’s clergy members. She truly loved the Lord and served Him until the end. Even in her last days on Earth, she would break out in song with one of her favorite hymns, ‘One Day at a Time’.
She had a kind heart and loved people, especially her family. She enjoyed having company drop – by both expected and unexpectedly – to enjoy a laugh. For fun, Bea enjoyed attending Wayson’s bingo hall, playing cards and watching television. She thoroughly enjoyed the Game Show Network, any show or movie with the character “Madea”, and court shows – except Judge Judy, who she insisted was “too smart”. She became a “local celebrity” thanks to her weekly Sunday morning requests to WHUR’s gospel show with host Patrick Ellis; she never let a birthday, anniversary or special occasion go by without acknowledging its importance. Bea was also a gracious giver and donated to several charities over the decades.
In addition to her parents, Raymond and Isabelle Smith, Bea was preceded in death by her husband, Henry L. Sesker; seven siblings, Agnes Douglas, Jack Smith, Leroy Smith, John Smith, Joseph Smith, Charles Smith and James Smith; three children, Larry Sesker, Beverly Sesker and Henry B. Sesker; and two grandchildren, Todd Hicks Jr. and Antonio Sesker.
Bea leaves to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy: six children, Linda Miller (Marvin Sr.), Paul Sesker, Dolores Sesker-Jones (Ellis), Nancy Sesker-Coates (Adrian Sr.), Shelia Brooks (Eric) and Cynthia Claggett (Clyde); thirteen grandchildren, Joyce Sesker, Felisha Berry, Rasha Johnson, John Cole III, Cortez Fletcher, Tiffany Sesker, Keonté Smith, Thelia Jones (Antwon), Vincent Greenfield Jr., Shawn Greenfield, Adrian Coates Jr., Demetrius Wallace and Taylor Jones. She also leaves behind twenty great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Sharing in her memory are close family friends Ruby Sesker, Sherman Harried, Gwendolyn Gray and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Bea will be greatly missed by everyone.
