Obituary for MARTHA M. GREEN

Martha Magalene Greene was born on July 18, 1931, to the late Wilmore and Ellen Earle Greene. The Lord called our beloved Martha home on Sunday, February 10, 2013, after a short illness. Martha received her education in Calvert County Public Schools. She was a member of St. Edmonds United Methodist Church. She was baptized under the leadership of Elder James Larkin Sr., formerly of Kings Apostle Church in Chesapeake Beach MD. During her Christian walk at St. Edmonds, Martha enjoyed reading scriptures during the service; she was a member of the United Methodist Women, and the Flower Circle. She also enjoyed acting. During Black History Month, she portrayed Ms. Rosa Parks in a church production, as well as provided insight of past history and culture. Martha tithed faithfully until her passing. Martha was a devoted daughter and cared for her parents until their passing. In earlier years, she was employed by Maryland Gardens of Penn Mar, in Forestville, MD and Randall Cliff Development Center, Chesapeake Beach MD. She also worked at the Hecht Company during the holiday season, and performed domestic work for a period of time. In addition to other charitable contributions, she prepared income taxes for the community, and carried children school shopping. She even carried Ms. Ida Chambers to get her driver's license. Martha always greeted everyone with a warm smile. She was very humble, soft spoken, and friendly to all that she met. While still active, she thoroughly, enjoyed going to the North Beach Senior Citizens Center and participated in the various activities there. She was once featured in a calendar wearing her fancy 'Red Hat'. Martha loved clothes, especially, bright colors and prints, and she was always well accessorized with her very unique jewelry and scarves. I don't think any of us can say that we have ever seen her having a bad hair day or bad clothing day. She was definitely, a classy lady with a style and grace of her own. Martha loved reading the cards at birthday parties, and did so with enthusiasm and joy. It was pretty much understood that if cards were going to be read, Martha would be reading them. She also loved going to yard sales, just browsing about and picking up items here and there. Martha thoroughly, enjoyed attending family gatherings where she feasted on her favorite foods, such as baked chicken, fried fish, potato salad and kale. But most of all, Martha loved spending time and sharing laughs with her family and friends. Martha leaves to cherish her memory, son Howard Glenwood Emerson Sr.; one daughter-in-law, Elsa Emerson; two grandchildren, Faith Emerson, and Howard Emerson, Jr.; five great-grandchildren, Howard Emerson III, Shanice Bell, Teanna Emerson, Telia Emerson and Barry Holland, Jr., and one great-great grandson, Isaac Simms, Jr. She also leaves, one sister-in-law, Grace Greene, a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many other relatives and friends. Martha also leaves several special friends, Ruth Coates, Arnella Stephney, Ernestine Jones, Louise Mason, Mattie Gorman, Helen Mae Hurley; her faithful drivers, who provided her with transportation to and from church, and family gatherings, Dorothy Campbell and Dorothy Ann White, and a devoted first cousin, Helen Parran. Martha was preceded in death by her parents Wilmore and Ellen Greene, one brother, Carlton Greene, goddaughter, Sylvia Creek and special friend, Edith Jones.
