Obituary for MARIE VERLISTA HICKS

Marie Verlista Hicks, 94, of Prince Frederick, MD was born December 24, 1916 to the late Annie and Joseph Smith in Baltimore, Maryland. Marie quietly transitioned from this life on Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Calvert Memorial Hospital's Transitional Care Unit with her daughter Joan and granddaughter Rhonda at her bedside. Marie was educated in Baltimore, Maryland and later became united in holy matrimony to the late Theodore Estep Hicks, Sr. on the 11th day of February, 1933. In Marie's earlier years, she worked hard on the farm until the death of her husband. She was employed as a domestic worker and private duty caregiver in Washington, DC. Her final employment was with Calvert County Nursing Center, in Prince Frederick, MD, where she worked until she was eighty years old. Marie attended and was baptized at Patuxent U.M. Church at an early age. After relocating to Prince Frederick, she joined Brooks U.M. Church under the leadership of Rev. Joseph Collins. She later became a member of Healing & Deliverance Community Experience of the Holy Spirit under the leadership of Pastor Aniachi C. Belu John until her health began to fail. During her illness she became a member of Greater Mount Zion Church under the leadership of Pastor Dante King. Marie had a quiet demeanor; she was loving, caring, a generous giver, and always willing to offer a helping hand. She had such a big heart that she would give the clothes off her back. Marie loved family gatherings. You could always find her sitting and reading her Bible. She loved the Lord and her favorite sayings were "Lord, lead me, guide me and direct me" and "LORD HAVE MERCY" She use to say this so much, Joan would tell her "Mother, you know He has already given it to you." Marie was a mother, father, and grandmother to many. She gave, expecting nothing in return. She sung with the Senior Choir at Brooks United Methodist Church; her favorite hymn was "His Eyes is On the Sparrow." Marie leaves to cherish her memories, three daughters: Virginia Adams of Upper Marlboro, MD, Vivian Hicks of Accokeek MD, and, Joan Mackall of Prince Frederick, MD., one son: Carl Rayfield Hicks Of Prince Frederick, MD.; twenty-three grandchildren: Rhonda Ivey, Ronald Giddens, Arthur Giddens, and Patricia Y.
