Obituary for MABEL A. KING

Mabel Aileen Claggett King was born on January 17, 1933, to the late William and Sarah Claggett in Owings, Maryland. Mabel was given her rest on September 21st, 2021, at Georgetown Hospital in Washington D.C.

Mabel’s spiritual teachings were obtained at Mt. Hope Methodist Church in Sunderland and St Edmonds Methodist Church in Chesapeake Beach. She walked to Sunday school and morning services at Mt. Hope and rode to St Edmonds with family for afternoon services. In the 1970s Mabel returned to St Edmonds United Methodist Church and remained in worship until her latest illness. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23, and her favorite hymns were Amazing Grace, Have a Little Talk with Jesus, One Day At a Time, and Time Has Made a Change.

Mabel loved going to school daily at Mt. Hope Elementary in Sunderland and W.S. Brooke High in Prince Frederick. After graduation, she moved to Brooklyn, New York and then Washington D.C. Her desired goal was to become an expert care giver in which she accomplished through multiple supervisory positions. At Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn Mabel earned credit as a nurse’s assistant and went on to receive her registered nurse degree from The University of District of Columbia. Mabel has won many awards and work accommodations and had the type or heart and courage that took her from caring for patients at DC General Hospital to DC Jail, St Elizabeth Hospital and Lorton.

Mabel married Albert King Jr who predeceased her and spent her later years reunited with her first husband Frederick Morris. The two were inseparable almost until the end.
Balancing career and home at a revolutionary time during the women’s rights movement Mabel was the proud hardworking mother of six children, and 15 grandchildren.

Mabel’s descendants are as follows:
Phillip Morris- Deceased
• Phillip Jr
• Lydia
• Curtis
Valerie

Mabel’s love language was obviously acts of service and she gave as good as she received. Much like her mother you couldn’t be in the room with Mabel for five minutes without her putting you to work. You could also count on Mabel being there for you.
Mabel put a lot of love into planning birthday celebrations for her siblings each year:
James Edward- October 25th, Mary Magdalene- June 15th, Joshua William- Feb 14th Deceased at 5 months, John Wesley- October 8th, Martha Elizabeth- July 24th, Alice Louise- August 24th. Alice is the only survivor of the Claggett family circle.

Mabel lived a big life and her light shined on many. Her presence was impossible to deny. Mabel’s passing much like her life opened the heavens to a bright full moon followed by a powerful rain storm the next day. Her legacy of hard work and love will carry on in those of us who will continue to love her for generations to come.
