Obituary for Loretta Parran

Loretta VanDora Brooks Parran, daughter of the late William and Mary Gray Brooks, was born on June 16th in the year of 1912 in Calvert County. She transitioned into eternal rest early in the morning on Friday, June 13th at the Solomons Nursing Home.
She attended the historic one room school in Saint Leonard. As a very young child, she became a member of Brooks United Methodist Church where she sang in the Senior Choir under the leadership of former pastors Sherman Mason and Joseph Collins. Loretta was joined in marriage to the late John Julius Parran in 1950.
During her teenage years, Loretta began working at a Camp on Long Beach. She later began to do domestic work for many families that vacationed on Long and Calvert Beaches during the summer. Many days she walked to work. At one time she went to Long Branch, New Jersey to work. After returning home, she once again began working on the local beaches; sometimes taking in laundry for college students who were at the summer camp.
This elegant and meticulous lady enjoyed gardening and often completed repairs to her home which including climbing on her roof well up into her 80s. She took her first airplane ride in June of 1994 when she was only 83 years young. At the age of 90, Loretta renewed her drivers license and continued driving for at least another year thereafter. She enjoyed walking; often walking to the local post office two or three times a week. Loretta took pride in her home and in the way she fashionably carried herself.
She leaves to cherish her memories; 4 stepdaughters Catherine Adams of Aberdeen, Hortense Wilson of Owings, and Ruby Neely and June of Baltimore; 5 stepsons John Jackson of Huntingtown, Richard Jackson of Columbia, Walter of Hampton, Wilson Sr. of Prince Frederick, and Oliver of Baltimore; a niece Barbara Bryant, 3 first cousins Kathryn Dickerson, Erna Johnson and Reba Matthews; a sister-in-law Irene Parran of Prince Frederick; 5 stepdaughters-in-law Nellie Jackson, Marie, Gillian, Roberta, and Ava Parran; 36 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves the following special persons: Dorothy Gray (cousin), Englis & Sharon Gray (cousins), Ida Smith, Beatrice Washington, Doris Harris, Arlene Cheeks, Theodore Parker, Jr., The Williams Girls Dottie, Nancy, Virginia, Mary, Elaine and Shirley, Brooke Reynolds and Gloria Parker (prayer partners), and a special caregiver Victoria Johnson along with a host of other extended family members and friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband John Julius, sisters Sarah and Hortense; brothers Beauregard and John; stepsons John and Charles; step-granddaughter Ramona; and 2 closest friends Gladys Washington and Debbie White.
