Obituary for LAWRENCE M. JONES

The morning of Saturday, June 11, 2016, God called one of his faithful servants, Lawrence Mervin Jones, to his place of rest. Lawrence was born on October 23, 1925 to the late Lawrence and Alverta Gross Jones of Chesapeake Beach, MD. He was one of fourteen children born from this union.

He was educated in the public schools of Calvert County. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1947. Lawrence initially worked as a farmer, and then later was employed by Harkins Builders as a construction foreman where he worked for 35 years. At the completion of his 35 years,
Lawrence refused to retire so the company sent him a giant size card that said," Mr. Jones, it is time to retire. So he gracefully gave up the position.

On August 24, 1985, Lawrence was joined in Holy Matrimony to Dorothy Randall Stewart by the late Rev. Charles D. Collins. From this union they were blessed with two children, Lawrence Cheyenne and Cheryl. He also became father to Sterling, Stanley, Russell and Douglas Stewart. Lawrence and Dorothy were blessed with over 56 years of love and companionship together.

As a young man, Lawrence was a member of Patuxent UMC. In August of 1986, he joined Ward's Memorial United Methodist Church and remained a faithful member there until relocating to South Carolina in 2013 where he and Dorothy attended Quinby United Methodist Church.

Lawrence remained a member of Wards Memorial UMC even after relocating to Quinby. At Wards, he was very active in several ministries. His love for singing God's praises led him to be a member of the Men's Choir, Ever-ready Choir and Senior Choir. He was also active with the United Methodist Men and served as an usher.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his sisters, Annie, Cora, Ruth, Grace and Ruby; and brother, Asbury Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memories; his faithful and devoted wife, Dorothy; daughters, Cheryl Tongue (Christian) and Marlo Hawkins(Donnie) and sons, Sterling Stewart (Amelia), Stanley Stewart (Mary Ann), Russell Stewart (friend, Pat), Douglas Stewart (friend, Shawnda); Lawrence Cheyenne (Yvette), stepdaughter Myrtle Harvey, sisters, Sadie Coates, Mary Claggett, Alice Carroll, Clarice Hall; brothers, Oscar Jones (Lucy), Robert Jones (Ida), James Jones (Dorothy) and Lambertine Jones; twenty one grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
