Obituary for KAREN ANITA HOLLAND

Karen Anita Holland went on to glory at the age of 61 on Sunday, September 20th, 2015, after a short battle with an aggressive breast cancer. She was surrounded by both of her children as she peacefully transitioned at the Regional Medical Center of San Jose, California.

Karen was born on April 11th, 1954 at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC to Barbara Cooper (Forehand) and Sterling Holland. She graduated from Fairmount High School and went on to attend Howard University and the University of DC. Afterwards, she began her career in retail. She would spend over 25 years at Sears Roebuck in various roles. She completed the Scars management school and served as a sales supervisor for many years.

Karen loved fashion, singing, dancing, reading, and writing poetry. More than these she loved God with all her heart, her mind and her strength and she loved her children. Her son, Andre was born on January 4, 1979 and a year later came her daughter, Michee on March 22nd. She made sure that her children were raised to love God. She would bring them to church with her as she taught Sunday school and during her Praise Team rehearsals. Karen was a devout member of several churches, with First Baptist Church of Glenarden holding her membership the longest until she moved out west in 2008 to be closer to her daughter in Seattle. While in Seattle, Karen switched her focus to her grandchildren. She would spend hours each week taking them to the movies, swimming, and teaching them. Karen also remained active in her faith and regularly attended Freedom Church and later Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Seattle, WA.

In March 2015, Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer. She decided to move with her daughter to California to remain active with her grandchildren and receive support while she underwent treatment for the cancer. During her short time in California, Karen enjoyed trips to the beach and going to the pool with her grandchildren. She even had the opportunity to tour the campus of one of the Silicon Valley giants, Google. Karen was always tech savvy with her smart phone and tablet. You could always catch her sending an encouraging message or scripture on Facebook. The life she lived blessed not only her family but many that she would come into contact with whether online or in person.

She is survived by two children, and their spouses, Andre Holland and Michee Smith (Terry Smith); her mother, Barbara Forehand; brother, Quintin Jones and two grandchildren, Ava and Avery Smith.
