Obituary for JULIUS ALPHONZO HUTCHINS, JR.
Julius Hutchins was born to the late Julius Hutchins Sr. and Della Wallace on September 15, 1955. He departed this earthly life on Tuesday, December 31, 2019.
Julius was born in Calvert County, Maryland where he later moved to Washington DC and attended DuVal High School. There he was a standout three sport athlete in track, basketball, and football. He would go on to become Maryland State Sprinting Champ and earn a football scholarship to Arizona State as a running back. He would go as far as trying out for the St. Louis Rams but a foot injury on a sweep "ended my dream of buying my momma a house."
He entered the Navy and served proudly as he traveled the world. While in the Navy he worked as a jet mechanic, boxed in the heavyweight division, and played softball, where he suffered another knee injury that led to his medical discharge. He would retire from the military in 1998 and would eventually work for the Central Intelligence Agency as an analyst. Not long after, he began teaching History and Geography at Salem High School in Virginia Beach, where he also coached football. He would simply be known to everyone as Coach, and would retire as an economics teacher from Ocean Lakes High School.
Julius loved his sunsets and sunrises and would frequently spend his time at the beach walking his Airedale Terrier, riding his bike on the boardwalk, or with his head in the clouds. Bragging about family is all he did. He would brag about his late wife Trudy, his kids, his brothers, mother, nephews, dogs and strangers he just met, and even famous people he didn't know but liked to think he did.
No doubt about it, one of Julius's greatest qualities was his charm. There wasn't anyone he couldn't strike up a conversation with, as he could charm the pants off of even the Pope; The man could simply tell a story. In many ways he was our Forrest Gump. From his homeless nights in a U-Haul truck as a 15 year old after knocking his step dad out, to his days in college when he joined the Nation of Islam and would dine with Minister Farrakhan. And right when you thought you heard it all, he would come out of left field with another one that made you either think, laugh, or just not believe a single word of it.
Julius was also a very giving person, and one could argue he was giving to a fault. Whatever he had, you had. If you needed something and he had it, he would look out for you without question. He would give you the shirt off his back, but we all know it wouldn't fit anyway. His smile was rich, contagious and he remained a kid until the very very end.
Julius leaves to cherish his loving memories four children Julius, Olivia, Aaron, and Adam. Along with grandchildren Alana, Elias (Olivia) and Jacob (Julius Jr); Brothers Anthony, Nathan, Levi, Joey, Dario, Matthew, sisters Robin, Nicole, Lisa and a whole lotta cousins, nieces, nephew and in-laws.
And when his age and stamina would be called into question, he would so often say "I may not be as good as I once was, but I'm good once as I ever was."
