Obituary for JOYCE ERNESTINE BEVERLY
Joyce Ernestine Beverly was born on June 13, 1931, to the late Henry and Nettie Clark of Dowell, Maryland. She was one of nine children, seven of whom preceded her in death. She had a special bond with her siblings and always found time to spend with them.
Ernestine, as she was best known, was educated in the public school system of Calvert County, Maryland where she fostered a love of reading, math and penmanship. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Warren B. Beverly, Jr., of Lusby, Maryland on December 17, 1949. It was during this time that her calling unfolded – that is, how to be a Mom, and a great one at that. From their union, 11 children were born. Mom’s children were always her top priority, putting their needs before her own. She was determined to see that we did our best in our academic studies to become successful in our chosen vocations; and was our biggest supporter and cheerleader.
Ernestine was a dedicated stay-at-home Mom for many years. Later, she sought job opportunities outside of the home, to include Housekeeping; Chef at local restaurants; and Day Care Provider. As a Day Care Provider, Ernestine became known as everyone’s Mother as she faithfully and lovingly served the needs of local parents in the community until her health began to fail. During her tenure as Au Pair, she nurtured at least 30 children in her home. Her home became the hot-spot or drop-off location for all children, even her own and her grandchildren who visited her on weekends, holidays and vacations. Apart from Christ, children were her greatest passion and love in life. Her attitude was always that of love - love for self, family, and others. She never met a stranger and was welcoming to everyone. As a result, she became known as Ma, Mum, Mom, Mom Teny, Momma Teny, Ma-T, Teny and Grandma.
Some of Ernestine’s favorite activities included word-find and crossword puzzles; crocheting and sewing; as well as watching soap operas, figure skating, and baseball on television. She also enjoyed taking care of her many beautiful plants and flowers, and especially loved decorating her home for the holidays. Mom loved to cook. Her crab cakes, imperial crab, potato salad, lasagna, rice pudding, sweet potato pie, dumplings, BBQ, and homemade Root Beer were legendary. God had a special way of anointing mom’s hands because her recipes could never be duplicated.
Ernestine was born and raised in the Catholic faith. After marriage she converted to United Methodism and became a faithful member of St. John’s United Methodist Church of Lusby, MD. It was there she served as Communion Steward, Custodian, and Intermediate Choir Member. Her Alto voice was like none other. During church rallies, Ernestine served as Co-Captain to raise funds for the church building. In later years, she attended Gibbons United Methodist Church where she helped with hospitality and other fund-raising programs. Upon relocation to Prince George’s County, she attended the Ark of Safety Christian Church and Jabbok International Fellowship with her daughters. She loved to present her best to God with colorful hats and outfits to match.
On Monday morning, June 1, 2020, God returned to claim one of His favorite daughters. Ernestine was preceded in death by her husband, Warren; two sons, Erskin and Warren Sylvester; three grandsons, Timothy Gray, Robert Gray and Wilbur Beverly, Jr; two brothers, Maurice Clark and James Clark; five sisters, Marie Gough, Vivian Reece, Carolyn Clark, Earlene Gross and Jean Brooks. Left with heavy hearts and fond memories of her are her children: Wilbur Beverly (Rose), Patricia Briscoe (James), Wayne Beverly (Mary), Sharon Beverly, Renee DeShazor, Marcia Beverly, Earl Beverly (Jeanette), Natalie Simmons, J.D. Beverly (Althea), and Andrea Fleet (Leslie); one sister, Marva Weems; 19 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
Today, we say good-bye to one who has meant so much to so many. Life as we knew it will be no more but fond memories will live forever in our hearts. Although Mom will be sorely missed, our loss is Heaven’s gain. To God be the glory! Thank you, God for the great things you have done. Sorrowfully Submitted, The Family
