Obituary for JOSEPH ADAMS
Our beloved Joseph "Joe" Adams peacefully departed this life to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 7, 2014, at Calvert Memorial Hospital. Joseph was born July 4, 1918, to the late John and Georgia Adams.
Joseph was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Gladys Irene Rawlings on January 5, 1940. This marriage spanned a period of six decades. Gladys preceded him in death, passing on to her eternal rest on January 5, 1997.
Joseph grew up in Calvert County, Maryland, where he attended the public schools. As a young man, Joseph worked in the tobacco fields with his father and sometimes was 'hired out' to earn monies for the family's finances. As a result, he developed a pivotal work ethic from these experiences. Throughout his life, his occupation varied from welder to construction worker, but, ultimately, he pursued the passion of his life, farming with his sons. His unique expertise as a tobacco farmer and vegetable gardener was renowned throughout Southern Maryland. He was a meticulous farmer who demanded excellence from himself and his children in all they did.
Joseph enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, traveling and sharing the highs and lows of life. He shared many fun times with his lifelong friend, the late Frank Hampton Bowie. lt was a paradox that Hampton's son would later provide loving care to Joseph in his last year of life. Joseph, also, valued the friendship of some special friends, Robert Booze, Howard Booth and Hilda Grade.
In his latter years, Joseph accepted Christ as his personal savior under the guidance of Brother Charles Kinslow and Leonard Greene. He was a member of, and faithfully attended, Mt. Hope United Methodist Church, serving on the Men's Choir until his health prevented him from participating. Joseph loved to "sing and hum" the great songs of Zion.
Joseph was a quiet man who lived a humble life. He managed his family and household with a loving and disciplined hand. He loved fun, but wanted all things in decency and order. His dedication, devotion and determination were inherited by generations of the Adams family, who have experienced spiritual, academic and professional fulfillment.
Joseph was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph, Jr. and Kermit Jesse Adams. Cherished memories of Joseph will be kept by his loving children: Robert, Doris, Winfield, Earlene, Marvin (Stewart), Glenwood, Lenwood and Renee; two brothers: James Adams and Harry Adams; three brothers-in-law: Otis Holland, Melvin Emerson and Ronald Strother; four sisters-in-law: Beatrice Holland, Dorothy, Lillian and Angeline Adams; five daughters-in-law: Shirley, Rita, Alfreda, Jackie and Faye; three sons-in-law: Calvert Davidson, Leonard Greene and Brenton Service; twenty-five grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and a host of special nieces and nephews, friends and relatives.
