Obituary for JOHN NORMAN KING, SR.
John Norman King, Sr., son of Norman Stewart King and the late Helen Dorothy Chase-King was born on September 10, 1943, in Calvert County, Maryland.
John Norman King, Sr., known to all as "JR", departed this life on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at his home in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. In addition to his mother, JR was preceded in death by his three daughters, Yvette Johnson, Sarah King and Renee Smith and three brothers Robert Lee King; Martin Luther King, Sr., and George Joseph King, Sr.
JR was educated in the Calvert Country Public School System. JR married Carolyn King on April 27, 1961 and from that union they had seven children. JR spent his early years working as a Maintenance Technician at Oxon Hill Manor and working at Dorsey Gray Ford as a Mechanic. In the earlier 80 's JR started working for Whitfield Chapel Apartments in Lanham, Maryland as Head Maintenance Manager, it was there that JR and Susan King successfully manage and maintenance the property for over 30 years until their retirement in 2010. JR always had a love for music, growing up singing in the church with his brothers and later on in life joining two bands The King of Hearts and The Hounds. But nothing compared to his passion for racing cars. JR always loved race cars. Through the years JR acquired a lot of race cars but the most famous was a Brown Plymouth Duster that he called "The Cookie Monster". Any given Saturday and Sunday you could find JR at Capital Raceway. JR’s love for the race track never stop, he sold his Chevy 50 Race Truck in 2010 before relocating to Rocky Mount, North Carolina for his retirement.
JR leaves to cherish his memory: his life-long Love, Susan King; his father Norman Stewart King; his eight daughters, Ruth King-Cottrell (Jim), Sheila Swinton (Larry), Rosetta King, Shelisa King-Doctor (Gerald), Cassandra Tyler (Carlton), Barbara Wells (Norman), Ingrid Banks (Michael) and Tammy Valentine (Michael); his four sons, John King, Michael King (Jean), George Chase (Brenda) and Donnell Farmer; his step-children, Lutcher, Edward, Susie, Penny, and Julie; his five brothers, Collins King(Kimberly), Roy King (Miracle), Richard King (Annette), Marcel King(Princess) and Ronnie King(Mary Belle); forty-seven grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, uncles, aunts and other relatives.
