Obituary for JOAN FREELAND O'NEAL

Joan Freeland O’Neal was born on May 20, 1948 to the late Edith and Stanley Freeland in Prince Frederick, Maryland (Calvert County). Affectionately known as “Joanie”, she was the second born of their three children. Joan resided in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Joan departed this earthly life on August 12, 2015 at the age of 67 during a brief hospitalization.

She attended public schools in Calvert County and graduated from W.S. Sampson Brooks High School in the spring of 1966. Joan entered Bowie State College (now University) in the fall of 1966. At Bowie, she enjoyed the intimate setting of a small college knowing most of the students and interacting with them on a personal level. Joan experienced much pleasure and achieved a strong sense of accomplishment as one of the first twenty-one pledges of Delta Sigma Theta at Bowie. She was known to her line sisters as “Teddy Bear” due to her ability to sleep like a bear from the early afternoon to late in the evening, then wake up to do her homework in the middle of the night. It was an honor for Joan to become Miss Bowie in 1970. Years later, on October 17, 2014 she received the “Spirit Award” at the 26th Annual Bowie State University National Alumni Association, Inc’s Scholarship Gala at Martin’s Cross Winds in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Joan graduated from Bowie State College in the spring of 1970 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and graduated with a Master of Education in Special Education in 1977. Attending Bowie State College was one of the most rewarding chapters of Joan’s life which greatly prepared her for her career as an elementary school teacher. She taught in the Prince George’s County Public School system from 1970 until her retirement in June 2000 after teaching elementary children for 30 years.

Joan was like a “gold watch” quietly running but keeping perfect time after she joined Mt. Horeb Baptist Church in 1988. She served as a member of the Finance Committee and often expressed her joy in doing so. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Mt. Horeb Baptist Church Federal Credit Union for several years and served as secretary of the credit union under Presidents Julia Edwards and Ruby Macon for several years also. Her record keeping was exemplary while in office; any need to recall or pull records was never a problem for Joan.

Joan married the love of her life, the late James T. O’Neal who brought her joy and happiness. They were joined in holy matrimony in 1992. Joan and James enjoyed vacationing, spending time at their condo in Ocean City, Maryland and traveling to North Carolina to visit family. Joan and James shared a great sense of humor, always making each other laugh. Joan was a friendly person who enjoyed the fellowship of family and friends. She had a strong faith in God and freely gave herself to family and friends. Joan made friends everywhere she went. She loved to talk and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Joan was known for her early morning telephone calls, sweet potato pies, and her love of taking naps. One of her confessions was to hold tightly to the Lord who does not change and keep a loose hold on everything else. Evidently, this was one of the things that brought out the beauty in her because none of us can recall a time when she was not pleasant, smiling, and harmonious.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents Edith D. Freeland and Stanley H. Freeland and her husband James T. O’Neal. Joan leaves to celebrate her homecoming and to cherish fond memories of her, an aunt, Bernice Carter; a sister, Joan Freeland; a brother, Larry Freeland (Diane); a sister-in-law, Barbara Overby (Robert); a niece Melanie Woodson (Sam); two nephews, Corey Overby and James Overby (Vivian); a great niece, Chloe Woodson; a great nephew Trent Woodson; a Godmother, Ruby Macon; and a host of Freeland cousins, along with many other family members and friends from near and far. Thank God for the love of family and many, many, many friends.
