Obituary for JESSE ULYSSES DELEAVER

Jesse Ulysses DeLeaver, "The King," was born Feb. 7, 1940 to James & Clara DeLeaver in Baltimore, MD. He was educated in Baltimore Public Schools & further trained with the U.S. Army, Greyhound Bus & Grand-Hyatt Hotels.

As a youngster, Jesse tried to fly like Batman & often banged himself up-so often, his mother gave him a card to go to Johns Hopkins Clinic to get patched up. Jesse had the memory of an elephant, once recalling walking down the street (on a snowy day), with his mom holding his hand-while unbutt oning & removing his clothes with his other hand! When his mom looked down, he was half undressed!

While in elementary school, Jesse spent many summers & holidays with his grandparents in VA. Once during these travels, when they transferred bu ses in Waldorf, he looked up at the Greyhound bus & announced that he was going to drive one of those buses when he grew up-& he did just that. He was a true believer that if someone else could do it, he could do it too.

After high school, Jesse joined the U.S.Army & became a Paratrooper, jumping from aircrafts with parachutes. He was deployed to Santa Domingo in 1965 to "put down" the Uprising. There he faced war & combat, which caused PTSD & flashbacks the rest of his life. He penned an account of this deployment.

After his Army career, Jesse was a volunteer fireman with the Baltimore Fire Dept. He drove for Baltimore Metro Transit for over a decade. He then drove for D.C. Greyhound & then retired. After a few months of retirement, he worked for the Grand-Hyatt Hotel in D.C. & retired again ten yea rs later, for good.

Jesse was a man of many talents - he could fix anything. He was an avid speaker, dancer, fisherman, chess player, comedian, craftsman & poet, with poems in the Library of Congress. He won many awards, certificates, letters of commendation & medals: including PRCHT Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal & Combat Infantryman Badge.

In retirement, Jesse liked to birdwatch, play cards, talk to people (he never met a stranger) and spend time with his dog, Keno (named after his favorite game). He was so attached to Keno that Keno rode "shotgun" everywhere they went. They were quite a pair-inseparable! "King Buzzy's" reign lives on...and he did it-his way!

Jesse was predeceased by his parents, James Robert DeLeaver Sr. & Clara Francis (Gaskins) DeLeaver, son-in-law Barry Rubin, brother James Jr., sister Janice Jones, brother-in -law Ralph Coates & grandson Antre'vyn Mason-Black. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 27 years Idella M.W. DeLeaver, his children Gary & Roderick DeLeaver, Gina Bond , Jason DeLeaver, Angel Mason-Callaway (Lawrence) & Wanda Louis Rubin, his siblings Douglas DeLeaver (Margie), Cynthia DeLeaver-Coates, Rodn ey DeLeaver Sr. (Mary), Jacqulyn DeLeaver Pitts (Curtis) & Michelle DeLeaver Olson (Eric), his grand children Armani, Alani, Arrington & Victoria and a host of family & friends.
