Obituary for JEANITA T. PRESSLEY

Jeanita T. Pressley was born on June 18, 1942 along with her twin sister to the late Rev.
Charles Lilbon and Ruth Henry Tyler. Her oldest brother, Earl, preceded her in death.

Educational Season:
Jeanita's family moved to Powhatan County, VA where she loved the rural atmosphere. She
learned to read at the age of 4 years old and began her early education at 6 years old. The
family relocated to Richmond in 1951 where she attended grade school and graduated from
Maggie L Walker High School in 1960. She became a licensed cosmetologist. She graduated
from Jericho Bible College with a degree in Biblical Studies. She would later graduate from
National Bible College and Seminary in Fort Washington, MD with an associate and bachelor's degree. She was a member of the Capital Centre Toastmasters Club where she was awarded the trophy for best Table Topics.

Worship Season:
Jeanita received Christ and was baptized at the age of 9 years old at Rock Hill Baptist Church in Hanover County, VA. She devoted most of her life to Kingdom building through church work and ministry. During her pre-teen years, she learned to be a missionary from Miss Minnis at Mount Olivet Baptist Church. donating can goods from her grandmother's pantry. In her young adult years, she joined Cedar Street Baptist Church where she sang in the Junior Choir under the leadership of the renowned Jimmy Roots and the Junior Usher Board under Mr. Butler.

Upon relocating to the District of Columbia, she joined the Isle of Patmos Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Dr. George B. Rogers where she sang on the Gospel Chorus, member of the Pastor's Aide Club and June Club, taught Sunday School, charter member of the Royal Usher Board, and Supervisor of the Junior Usher Board. She was ordained an elder at Jericho Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Bishop James R. Peebles, Sr and Apostle Betty P. Peebles. She served in several capacities: choir member, drama ministry, People of the Word, and "Grandma Nursery". She was an instructor in the Jericho Bible College, where she taught God's Armorbearer and Spiritual Warfare. She preached in many services throughout the DMV.

She moved to Calvert County where she soon joined Crossroad Christian Church. She later
joined the Mount Olive United Methodist Church where she served as Lay Speaker under Rev. Patricia Berry and Rev. Dana Jones. She subsequently joined Calvert County Baptist Church. In her many visits to Richmond, VA she became associated with her eldest child's church; she was dearly loved and respected by the pastors and members of Words of Deliverance World Wide Ministries. They gave her the title of "Church Mother". She was known for her Sunday attire of matching hat, suit, purse and shoes. She joined the Daughters of Abraham, an ecumenical group of women who share their faith beliefs with one another.

Work Season:
She joined the military in 1975. She was determined to be a sergeant in the Armed Forces. She married the late James L. Pressley, who was a sergeant. She said that wasn't enough; she wanted the title. She persevered until she earned the rank in DC National Guard. During those 14 years, Jeanita also achieved Staff Sergeant. She joined the Federal Government workforce at the Department of the Interior and retired from the Pentagon in December 2000.

Fun and Hobby Season:
Jeanita enjoyed traveling by air, land and sea. She visited all 50 states, many of them at least
twice: 5 continents and most of the Caribbean Islands.

She made the beautiful jewelry. All you had to do was tell her what colors you wanted and
whether you wanted earrings, bracelet or necklace or a combination of them. She would create pieces to fit your personality and style.

Jeanita had a green-thumb. She loved gardening and grew some of the best vegetables and
flowers that bloomed year-round.

She enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society. She was a charter member of the Scarlet Threads of Largo. She would take a $5.00 hat and make it look like 5th Avenue. Nothing was impossible to her once she set her mind to it from learning to ride a bicycle, driving, swimming, dancing, or vigorously encouraging someone to take a chance on their dream.

She enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes, especially the Island flavor. If anyone requested a special dish, it was theirs for the asking.

Volunteer Season:
She did short-term mission work in Africa and Jamaica. She was a generous supporter of St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital. She opened her home as a foster parent and loved each of them as her own children. She volunteered at Jessup Prison for women by rendering church services and providing toiletries to inmates.

Jeanita enjoyed volunteer work that included Warm Nights and Farming 4 Hunger at Serenity
Farm. She had adopted the concept of making mats from plastic bags for the unhoused. This
act of kindness was shared by many people in the faith community. Jeanita served as the vice
president of the board of directors for Open Doors, transitional housing for the unhoused in
Prince Frederick. She enjoyed preparing meals for the keepers of Serenity Farm in Calvert
County. They showed their appreciation and love by helping her celebrate her 75th and 76th
birthdays at the farm.

Family Season:
Jeanita is survived by her children, JL Pressley, Dr. Torrie L. Ford; son-in-law, Francis M. Ford, Sr.; grandchildren, Olivia M. Ford, Francis M. Ford, Jr.; great-grandbaby, Journey Fripps; siblings, twin sister. Rev. Juanita Parks (Robert), Elder Bobby H. Tyler (Patricia), Frances Tyler Jones, Reginald Hux (Carol); devoted sisters-in-law, Lucille A. Pressley and Ruth Tyler, and Vashti Lee-Tyler, Mae Jane Jones, Stella Rivers (preceded her in death): Jeanita and Juanita reared their children as one family - a favorite niece, Rev. Dr. JaNice L. Parks, a favorite nephew, Stanley W. Tyler, Sr. (Regina); eight nieces, five nephews, a host of great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews - all of whom she dearly loved; eight first cousins and a host of cousins and friends. She is also survived by her best friends, Wilnette Green (66 years), Theresa Gore (51 years), Jean Smith - preceded her in death (50 years) and her loving and devoted Monica Wilson and Red Hat sisters. She was a mother to many and a friend lo all. She was very proud of her great-nephew, Staff Sergeant Stanley W. Tyler, Jr., serving in the Army and currently on his 3rd deployment to the Middle East.

Final Season:
In 2016, she joined Calvert County Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Darryl and
First Lady Rose Godlock, where she felt welcomed and loved. She enjoyed the worship
experience and didn't mind expressing her praise and thanksgiving to a living God. She would
call her twin every Sunday evening and they would discuss their church services. Mommie, Ma, Lil' Grandma, Aunt GeeGee, Aunt Two. Mother Pressley, Sister Jeanita, Best Friend, whatever you called her, will be missed here: but the good news is that to be absent from us is to be present with the Lord!
