Obituary for JAMES W. JOHNSON, SR.
James Wilson Johnson Sr. was born on August 24, 1937, to the late Gourley and Carrie M. Johnson in Calvert County, MD. James, affectionately known as “Wilson or Pop”, received his wings, early in the morning on May 23, 2020.
After graduating from William Sampson Brooks High School, Wilson became employed at Warren Denton Oyster House. On October 3, 1958, he was joined in holy matrimony to the late Jannie M. John- son, and from that union they had three children. Wilson worked for the State of Maryland as an Agricultural Inspector for 37 years, until his retirement.
Since his days as a youth, Wilson loved to sing; he could always lift a person’s spirit with a song of praise. Pops enjoyed traveling throughout the state of Maryland singing and as a member of the Severn Singers. Wilson was a dedicated member of Apostle True Foundation Church of Jesus Christ, where he served as the Chairman of the Deacon Board and a member of the Men’s choir. Wilson was also a Prince Hall Mason, Landmark Lodge #40 in Catonsville, MD.
Wilson’s favorite past time was visiting auctions; where he some- times volunteered, collecting miscellaneous items which for some it was junk, but for Wilson he saw a greater purpose.
He also enjoyed working on vehicles, broken or not, often times he would incorporate someone to assist him, whether to hold a flash- light or hand him a tool. Occasionally he would help his longtime friends at their repair shops.
As co-laborers at Apostle True Foundation Church of Jesus Christ, James met Iris Marie (Word), and after a short courtship they were married in a sacred union on April 16, 2005. For 15 years they shared life, love, and fellowship – traveling and enjoying one another, until his illness. Iris provided undying care and love to her husband, standing by him until the Lord called him home.
Through this union, Pop gained an extension to his family. often times he would speak about how much fun he had playing with “the nieces”, who loved him as well.
Wilson was a dedicated patriarch who loved and served the Lord. He leaves to mourn his wife, Iris Marie Johnson. His children Vivian P. White (preceded him in death), Darlene S. White, and James W. Johnson Jr. (Miko). One brother Enoch, three sisters Iris, Mabel, and Roberta, (and brother in laws). His mother in law Irene Word; a host of grandchildren (9) and great grands (11) whom he loved, and an abundance of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Wilson will be remembered as a gentle giant, a kind and respectful man with the biggest heart.
