Obituary for HELEN M. HURLEY

Helen Mae Hurley, affectionately known as HelMae by her family and close friends was born ApriI 30, 1931 in Owings, Maryland, to the late Ada Rebecca Morsell and Herbert Joseph Bowie. Helen Mae quietly slipped away to be with the Lord on July 4, 2015. Above all, Helen Mae was known for her strength and determination and was defined by her unending faith and trust in God. Helen Mae valiantly took on her illness and showed us what strength, courage and grace are really like. She continued to attend her Sunday church services and Bible studies until her death.

On September 22, 1952, Helen Mae married the love of her life, Alvin Hurley, who preceded her in death. From this union they were blessed with seven children; five sons and two daughters.

Helen Mae was educated in the Calvert County Public Schools. She was employed at the Sea Breeze Restaurant in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland as a cook and later at Thomas Motor Tours in Lothian, Maryland as a secretary. While at Thomas Motor Tours, she acquired the skills to coordinate trips. This allowed her the opportunity to help her customers and peers plan their travel to various places.

At an early age, Helen Mae attended Mt. Hope Methodist Church in Sunderland, Maryland. In 1958, she joined Wards Memorial United Methodist Church in Owings, Maryland under the leadership of Pastor Frank Chambers, and remained a devoted servant.

Among her many accomplishments and contributions to Wards, Helen Mae served as a church delegate, President of the Ever-Ready and Senior Choirs, Lay Speaker, United Methodist Women, Bible Study Group, Church School Superintendent, and Chairperson of the Staff Parish Relations Committee. Helen Mae, along with Myrtle Patterson, strongly supported the start of the United Methodist Women's Group in Calvert County. For more than 13 years, Helen Mae also served as the travel coordinator and
organized numerous trips for the church and community. They traveled to the Holy Land in Orlando, Florida, Martha's Vineyard, Canada and Jamaica, to name a few. The most requested and popular trip was the shopping and Sight and Sound Theatre trip in Dutch Country, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Helen Mae was a diligent community volunteer. She was often heard saying, "The Lord is the strength of my Life and I will serve Him until I die." Several of the organizations she volunteered for included: the Calvert County Nursing Home Auxiliary, the Annual Alzheimer's Walk, and the She-Gulls (the Red Hat ladies) at the North Beach Senior Center. Most near and dear to her heart was the Board of Child Care, a human service organization that helps children. She and her beloved friend, Mary Beth Allen, spent endless hours planning Christmas parties and collecting canned goods and gifts for the youth of the Board of Child Care.

Helen Mae loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest, bringing many hours of joy to family and friends. Those who phoned her were always greeted by her most popular phrase "PRAISE THE LORD" when she answered. She loved to travel and she enjoyed singing and listening to traditional hymns. She enjoyed attending services and activities at other churches. Her favorite scripture was Galatians 1:4 "To God be the glory forever and ever". Her favorite pastimes were reading the Bible and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

Helen Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Sr. and her son Ricky. Left to cherish her memories are her children, Alvin Jr. (Connie), Bertina (Lamont), Eleanora (Ralph), Anthony (Mary), Clinton, and Steven; step-son, Randolph Hurley, Sr. ; One brother-in-law, Leon Hurley; seventeen grandchildren, Angela Brooks (Kevin), Conn, Alvin III , Carlo (Rosalyn), Andre, Cyle Hurley, Tonya Parran Wilkerson (Kevin), Ramona Parran, Samantha Parran, Ralph Parran, Jr., Shantell Willis, Dominique Butler, Dominic and Brooke Hurley, Kylie Ford, Randolph Hurley, Jr. (Jeanine), Adeela Gaither, Calvin and Lisa Hicklin, eighteen great-grand-children, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Helen Mae developed and cherished a special relationship with Leroy Holland (Wookie) and his siblings. She also adopted Robert Randall as a son.

A special thanks is extended to two very faithful friends, John Henry and Cozette Gray, who chauffeured Helen Mae and her sister, Elizabeth Wills, to various church services; Ravia Nero, Shirley Jordan, Alice Austin, Leola Johns, Nancy Adams, Ruby Matthews, Barbara Ann Williams and Geraldine Gray who
provided weekly companionship, ministry, love and care during Helen Mae's most critical times; and her loving Wards Church family who consistently visited and provided prayer, laughter and delicious meals according to her taste buds. A note of thanks is also extended to Pastor Joan Jones for her love and support.

Helen Mae touched the lives of many. Although she now resides in the abiding comfort of the Creator, she created a legacy that will live on through us, her family and friends.
