Obituary for GRANWELL WAYMAN CHEW
Granwell Wayman Chew, affectionately known as “Chew” was born on June 18, 1952 in Calvert County, Maryland to the late Howard Leander, Sr. and Doris Mae Chew. The seventh of eleven children, Granwell grew up in Huntingtown, Maryland where he started working in the tobacco fields at the age of seven and developed a deep love for agriculture. He quickly realized the importance of lard work, and his amazing work ethic and determination led him to graduate from Calvert High School in 1970, and then from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in Agriculture. He soon became a teacher for 9 years in the Maryland Public School System.
In 1982, Granwell and Lopez Chew adopted their only child, GW Arnez Chew. Soon after, Granwell began his new career as a professional horticulturist and landscaper. He "literally' was a walking plant library, and beautified homes and commercial properties throughout the D.C. Metropolitan region. For the last 17 years, Granwell diligently worked for the D.C. Housing Authority as Landscaping Maintenance Supervisor and ended his career as a Regional Maintenance Supervisor. He was a friend, brother, and father figure to many of his co-workers.
Granwell was known for his good cooking and his famous BBQ. Every year he would plant a delicious garden, and he truly enjoyed playing with his grandchildren.
Granwell was preceded in death by his parents: Howard Leander Chew, Sr. and Doris Mae Chew; three sisters: Velma Robinson, Gloria Bookard, and Faye Chew; and one brother Franklin Chew.
Granwell leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Lasharn Chew; three sons: GW Chew (Tina), Samuel Mayo, and Glen Monk (Tatiana); three daughters: Bre Pollard, Monyetta Monk, and Tierra Monk; eleven grandchildren: Zariah, Jaela, McKenzie, Zion, Jaden, Aiden, Ariana, Aria, Nevaeh, Kennedy, and Caleb; three sisters: Rev. Evelyn Williams, Patricia Chew, and Vanessa Chew; three brothers: Floyd Chew, Howard Chew Jr., and Rev. Lawrence Chew (Margie}; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
